Alto Section Leader
posted 9/30/2022

St. James Cathedral, Seattle, has an opening beginning in November for an alto or countertenor singer, preferably with a strong lower register (Alto II), to join the Cathedral Cantorei, the professional ensemble that supports the volunteer Cathedral Choir during regular Thursday rehearsals (7:30-9:30 pm) and Sunday morning Masses (generally a 9:00 am call for 10:00 am Mass). The season runs from September through June, with opportunities to sing throughout the summer. Cantorei also sings for extra liturgies, including Advent Readings & Carols and All Souls Requiem. Availability during Christmas and Holy Week/Easter is essential.

The successful applicant will have a flexible voice that is comfortable singing a wide range of choral repertoire, the ability to blend within an ensemble while providing solid vocal leadership, excellent sightreading skills, and a personable and professional attitude suitable to acting as a choral leader to volunteers. Ideally, the applicant will have experience as a cantor in the Catholic Church, and be amenable to taking on extra calls as a cantor for weddings, funerals, Vespers, and other liturgies, but this is not a requirement.

Base pay is $34/hour, with a minimum 2-1/2 hour call ($85.00). For more information and to apply for an audition, send resume to Joseph Adam, Director of Music, at musicoffice@stjames-cathedral.org.
