We commemorate the Feast of All Souls with a solemn Mass for the Dead featuring Gabriel Fauré's Requiem. Fauré said of his best-known work, "It has been said that my Requiem does not express the fear of death and someone has called it a lullaby of death. But it is thus that I see death: as a happy deliverance, an aspiration towards happiness above, rather than as a painful experience." He also said that the work "is dominated from beginning to end by a very human feeling of faith in eternal rest." Experiencing Fauré's music with choir and orchestra within the context of a Mass at St. James Cathedral brings a spiritual aspect that is difficult to replicate in the concert hall.
