Pilgrimage to Rome has been central to the Church’s Jubilee celebrations
since 1300. At the four Major Basilicas in Rome—St. Peter’s, St. Paul Outside
the Walls, St. John Lateran, and St. Mary Major—Pope Francis will open the
special Jubilee doors for pilgrims. In addition, every Cathedral church
throughout the world is a designated place of pilgrimage during the Jubilee. At
St. James Cathedral, Archbishop Sartain has designated the Cathedral’s great
bronze doors as the Doors of Mercy for this Jubilee.
St. James welcomes pilgrims to come on their own and participate in a
self-guided Way of Mercy through the Cathedral, beginning at the Doors of Mercy
and continuing with prayer stations at important places throughout the
Cathedral. Parish and school groups large and small are invited to plan a
pilgrimage to the Cathedral. Parish groups are especially encouraged to
consider coming on Sunday afternoons, when they will be invited to enter through
the Mercy Doors and join the Cathedral parish community in Evening Prayer with
Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament. We are happy to offer a guided tour
for your group or you can simply spend time in prayer.
Please contact Corinna Laughlin,
claughlin@stjames-cathedral.org,
