Each year at the beginning of Advent, the Cathedral hosts the celebration of Our
Lady of Guadalupe, Mother of the Americas. This celebration brings together
people from across western Washington, and is coordinated by Isaac Govea of the
Hispanic Ministry Office of the Archdiocese.

Saturday, November 30, 2013. We began the
joyful season of Advent with the traditional lighting of the Advent wreath.
Friday, November 22, 2013. Many gathered for a special Mass in
memory of the victims of the catastrophic Typhoon Haiyan in the Philippines.
Thursday, November 7, 2013. A special
Mass honored and remembered the eighty-five homeless persons who died on our
streets in the past year.
Sunday, November 3, 2013. The children of
the parish celebrated All Saints Day by carrying images of their favorite saints
in the entrance procession.
Friday, November 1, 2013. We celebrated the solemn Mass of All
Souls with Mozart's Requiem. During this beautiful liturgy, the books
of the dead--including the names of all those parishioners who have died in the
past year--are carried in procession.
Tuesday, October 29, 2013. We
celebrated a special service in remembrance of firefighters who died in the line
of duty, in conjunction with a national gathering of firefighter chaplains from
across the country.
Saturday, October 5, 2013. Father
Bryan Dolejsi, Director of Vocations for the Archdiocese of Seattle, offered a
special Mass for vocations in the Cathedral.
Wednesday, October 2, 2013. We celebrated the Funeral Mass of
Father William Gallagher, Cathedral pastor from 1973-1988.
Sunday, September 22, 2013. We
welcomed Archbishop Niederauer, Archbishop
Emeritus of San Francisco, who celebrated a special Mass with the Knights and
Ladies of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem.

Saturday, September 7, 2013. In response to Pope Francis' call
for a day of prayer and fasting for peace in Syria, St. James Cathedral
partnered with Temple de Hirsch Sinai, St. Mark's Episcopal Cathedral, and the
Church Council of Greater Seattle to sponsor an interfaith prayer and procession
for peace. Some 300 people joined in a procession along Madison Street from St.
James Cathedral to Temple de Hirsch Sinai.
Saturday, September 7, 2013. Our annual Liturgy Day gathered
the Cathedral's hundreds of liturgical ministers--Extraordinary Ministers of
Holy Communion, Ushers, Emmaus Companions, Altar Servers, as well as members of
the Cathedral Choir and Women's Schola, for a day of reflection and renewal. Our
keynote was offered by the Archdiocese of Seattle's new Director of Liturgy,
Andrew Casad, who spoke about the liturgical minister as the "icon" of Christ.
August 12-18, 2013. Our Schola Cantorum Choir Camp wound up a
wonderful week by providing splendid music at the 10:00am Mass.

Sunday, July 28, 2013. We celebrated the Feast of St. James
with special solemnity, and with a parish picnic.

Tuesday, July 16, 2013. Archbishop
Sartain and his classmates from the North American College class of 1978
celebrated their 35th Anniversary of Ordination with Mass at the Cathedral.

Saturday, June 29, 2013. Archbishop
Sartain celebrated Mass with the graduates of Christifideles, an important
program which enables lay ministers to complete Masters' Degrees at the School
of Theology and Ministry at Seattle University.
Sunday, June 16, 2013. We celebrated the Sacrament of Baptism
with eleven beautiful children at the Noon Mass. Happy Father's Day!
Saturday, June 15, 2013. We celebrated the Seattle University
Baccalaureate with the graduating class of 2013.
Saturday, June 8, 2013. We celebrate the ordination of Deacon
Mark Kiszelewski to the priesthood.

the Rite of Reception into Full Communion with seven wonderful people. We
welcome with joy these newest members of the family of faith.
Thursday, May 23, 2013. We
celebrated the Holy Names Academy Baccalaureate. Congratulations, Class of
2013!
Sunday, May 19, 2013. One hundred and twenty-one volunteer
flautists helped us celebrate Pentecost with the haunting music of Henry Brant.
Thursday, May 16, 2013. Dr. Massimo
Faggioli, a brilliant young scholar of the Second Vatican Council, spoke about
the "battle for meaning" over interpretation of the Council, and touched on what
the future holds in light of the recent election of Pope Francis. Dr.
Faggioli's presence at the Cathedral was made possible by the parish of All
Saints in Puyallup.
Thursday, May 16, 2013. Around sixty senior parishioners
gathered in the Cathedral Rectory for a lovely tea--complete with cucumber
sandwiches!
Friday, May 10, 2013. Lay ministers from around the
Archdiocese gathered in the Cathedral for a special Mass celebrating the gifts
lay ministers bring to the Church. The beautiful banners were created by
Michelle Clinton of St. Michael Parish, Olympia.
Sunday, May 5, 2013. We celebrated First Holy Communion with
twenty-nine beautiful (and very excited!) children.

Wednesday, May 1, 2013. Five
Christian Brothers renewed their vows in the presence of the O'Dea community
during a special Mass honoring their founder, Blessed Edmund Ignatius Rice.
Monday, April 29, 2013. Father Ryan took part in an interfaith
press conference calling for an end to the gun violence that plagues our city
and our nation. "We need to do more than just wring our hands about the terrible
things that happen. We can no longer wait to take action."
Wednesday, April 17, 2013. This evening, we celebrated a
special blessing for Cabrini Ministry Training graduates from many parishes.
Saturday, April 13, 2013. Twenty-one young people and adults
were confirmed at the 5:30pm Mass by Bishop Elizondo.

the election of Pope Francis, Archbishop Sartain celebrated a special Mass of
Thanksgiving in the Cathedral.
Monday, March 11, 2013. We kept vigil in the Cathedral until
Midnight in preparation for the Conclave.
Sunday, March 3, 2013. We celebrated the first of the
"Scrutiny" rites with our Elect, those preparing to be baptized at the Easter
Vigil on March 30.
Thursday, February 28, 2013. As Pope Benedict XVI's
pontificate drew to an end in Rome, Archbishop Sartain presided at a special

Thursday, February 14, 2013. We celebrated the Rite of
Election with our eleven "Elect," those preparing for baptism at the great
Easter Vigil on March 30.
Wednesday, February 13, 2013. Thousands gathered at St. James
for Ash Wednesday, the solemn beginning of the season of Lent.
Monday, February 11, 2013. From Rome came the momentous news
of Pope Benedict XVI's decision to renounce the Papal throne owing to the mental
and physical weakness that come with age. Local media trucks surrounded the
Cathedral from an early hour!
Sunday, February 10, 2013. At the Noon Mass, the children
gathered around the altar for the singing of the "Alleluia" for the last time
before Lent begins.
Sunday, February 10, 2013. We celebrated the baptism of four
beautiful infants at the 10:00am Mass.
Saturday, February 9, 2013. St. James co-sponsored
an Interfaith Candlelight Vigil and March against gun violence. Here, hundreds
gather at Saint Mark's Episcopal Cathedral for the two mile march to St. James.

celebration honoring the Holy Child Jesus, the Santo NiƱo.
