Wednesday, December 21, 2005. We celebrate the Vigil of the
Solemnity of the Dedication of St. James Cathedral. At the
beginning of the Mass, we process through the church lighting
each of the twelve dedication candles. The Cathedral was
dedicated on December 22, 1907 and rededicated on the same date
in 1994, following its restoration and renovation.

youth musicians, readers, and servers lead this traditional

annual celebration of Simbang Gabi.

On Saturday, December 3, the Cathedral hosted the annual
Archdiocesan celebration of Our Lady of Guadalupe, Mother of the

Thanksgiving Day, 2005. At this beautiful celebration, gifts
of food items to the poor are brought forward to the altar at
offertory time. Here, these gifts are incensed along with the
gifts of bread and wine as the Liturgy of the Eucharist begins.
Sunday, November 20. At the beginning of our Year of Prayer
and Renewal, Father Ryan stands at the font to lead us in the
renewal of our baptismal promises. At each Mass, a member of
the Pastoral Vision Committee led the Cathedral parish
commitment.

Wednesday, November 2. Solemn Mass of All Souls with Faure's
Requiem. Here, servers surround the altar with light as the
Book of the Gospels is solemnly carried to the ambo.
Friday, October 21, 2005. Closing Mass for the Year of
the Eucharist. Auxiliary Bishop of Seattle Eusebio Elizondo
presided at this festive, multicultural Mass marking the
conclusion of the Year of the Eucharist, which began in October
2004.
The children of St. Catherine School in Seattle sang at the
Mass.
Sunday, October 2, 2005. First Sunday Youth Celebration.
This special Mass included a blessing of children, parents, and
catechists. Youth readers, servers, ushers, and musicians
helped to lead the people in the liturgy.
Saturday, September 24, 2005. Liturgy Day. Once a year
liturgical ministers gather together to be renewed in ministry.
After praying the Liturgy of the Hours together, we meditated on
the Mass, with brief presentations by Helen Oesterle, Jim
Savage, Sr. Claudette Conrad, and Patty Bowman. Then different
ministries participated in "breakout sessions" that focused on
specific issues and challenges. The morning concluded with Mass
in the Cathedral.
Sunday, September 4, 2005. A place of prayer for the victims
of Hurricane Katrina was established in the Cathedral's north
transept.
Friday, August 19, 2005. Prayer around the Cross with Music
from Taizé in memory of Brother Roger Schutz.
On Sunday, August 14, 2005, at the Noon Mass, St. James
held its second annual Multicultural Marian Celebration. This
year, the image of Our Lady of Lavang, dear to the people of
Vietnam, was given special honor.

Thursday, July 28, 2005. This week St. James Cathedral was
proud to host the summer institute of the Tallis Scholars. The
festival choir sang at special Vespers services three afternoons
this week, and performed two concerts in the Cathedral.
Sunday, July 24, 2005, the Feast of St. James. St. James
"the Greatest" surveys the assembly at the conclusion of the

On Monday, June 27, 2005, the eighth anniversary of the
death of Archbishop Thomas J. Murphy, Archbishop Brunett offered
Mass in memory of the deceased bishops who have served the
Archdiocese of Seattle. In the evening, a special Mass honored
Christian Brothers Hugh Greenan and Thomas LeJeune as they
celebrated the golden and silver jubilees (respectively) of
their profession.
Saturday, June 11, 2005. Ordination to the Priesthood.

Monday, June 6, 2005. An historic day for the Archdiocese of
Seattle: Father Eusebio Elizondo and Father Joseph Tyson were
ordained auxiliary bishops by Archbishop Alex J. Brunett.
Sunday, May 29, 2005. Corpus Christi. The 10:00am Mass
concluded with the traditional procession and Benediction of the

Monday, May 16, 2005. Anglican and Roman Catholic clergy
gather in the Cathedral for a Vespers service marking the launch
of
Mary: Grace and Hope in Christ, a landmark statement.
Archbishop Brunett and Anglican Archbishop Peter Carnley of
Perth, Australia, co-chair the Anglican Roman Catholic
International Commission (ARCIC) which prepared this statement.
Sunday, May 15, 2005. Father Ryan preaches at the 10:00am
Mass on Pentecost.
Sunday, May 15, 2005. The young women's choir Jubilate! sing
a prelude around the altar on Pentecost Sunday the Noon Mass.
Sunday, May 1, 2005. Celebration of First Eucharist.

Wednesday, March 16, 2005. Chrism Mass. This Mass gathers
people from all over the Archdiocese for the blessing of the
holy oils to be used in sacramental anointings at Easter and
throughout the coming year. Here Archbishop Brunett incenses
the oil standards at the beginning of the Mass. The heart of
the Chrism Mass is the blessing of the oils for the sick and the
catechumens, and the consecration of the oil of Sacred Chrism.
Sunday, March 13, 2005. At the Noon Mass we celebrated the
Scrutiny for the youth Elect, young people who will be baptized,
confirmed, and receive their first Eucharist at Easter. After
the prayer of blessing, their hands were anointed with the Oil
of Catechumens.
After the Noon Mass, the children prayed the Way of the Cross
together. At each of the stations we heard a scripture passage
and prayer.
Sunday, February 27, 2005. This week we celebrate the first
of three scrutinies of the Elect. The
scrutinies are ancient prayers of healing to strengthen the
Elect as they prepare for the sacraments of Easter. "God of
power, grant that these elect, who, like the woman of Samaria,
thirst for living water, may turn to the Lord as they
acknowledge the sins and weaknesses that weigh them down.... In
your love free them from their infirmities, heal their sickness,
quench their thirst, and give them peace."
Thursday, February 10, 2005. At the Rite of Election, the
catechumens enroll their names in the Book of the Elect. At
this point in their spiritual journey, they are no longer
catechumens, but Elect, called to the Easter sacraments of
Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist.
Sunday, January 23, 2005. At the 10am Mass, our Centennial
continued with a celebration of the Sisters of the Holy Names of
Jesus and Mary and the contributions they have made to the life
of the Cathedral parish in the last 100 years. At the
conclusion of the Mass, the Sisters surprised Father Ryan by
presenting him with their highest honor, the Holy Names Award.

Friday, January 21, 2005. Taizé Prayer for Christian Unity.
Christian leaders of many denominations gathered at our weekly
ecumenical prayer to pray for unity among Christians throughout
the world.
Sunday, January 16, 2005. Celebration of the Santo
Nino--Holy Child. Members of the parish bring their own images
of the Child Jesus to be blessed during this celebration. The
traditional image of the Santo Nino
de Cebu is given special honor.
Sunday, January 2, 2005. The Epiphany of the Lord. After
Mass Father Ryan distributes gifts of candy coins (a European
Epiphany tradition) to all the children.
