TUTORING ASSISTANT

OVERVIEW
Assists the Tutoring Coordinator with various aspects of the tutoring program including client outreach, volunteer recruitment and on-boarding, special projects, and supporting our volunteer immigrant liaisons. This position reports to the Tutoring Coordinator.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND TASKS
Client Outreach for ESL and Citizenship Preparation Tutoring

  • Maintain up-to-date information with referring and partner agencies regarding openings for clients
  • Promote word-of-mouth referrals among current and former clients
  • Work with other program and cathedral staff to identify prospective clients
  • Promote tutoring through social media, email, fliers, and other methods
  • Establish relationships with other immigrant service providers for referrals

Volunteer recruitment, on-boarding, and reporting

  • Recruit volunteers for tutoring and related positions
  • Respond to volunteer inquiries
  • Conduct volunteer information sessions and/or volunteer interviews
  • Call references on prospective volunteers
  • Track on-boarding process for individual prospective volunteers using the volunteer tracking spreadsheet
  • Conduct on-boarding of volunteers, including orientation, creating volunteer hard copy files and database records, and signing up/tracking pre-service training.
  • Collect and record tutoring hours monthly

Immigrant Liaisons

  • Recruit volunteers to act as immigrant liaisons.
  • Conduct all intake, orientation and training of immigrant liaisons
  • Assign clients
  • Distribute information to disseminate to clients
  • Meet with immigrant liaisons individually, as needed
  • Provide on-going support
  • Collect and record hours from cultural navigators
  • Maintain database and hard copy files

Other: special projects as assigned, attend staff meetings, attend advisory board meetings as requested, submit monthly reports, respond to walk-in inquires, collect and distribute mail, and answer phones.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
Experience in areas listed above; knowledge of and experience with immigrant communities, resources and issues in King County; strong interpersonal skills; organizational skills; proficiency in English and Spanish or Vietnamese; literate in Microsoft Office Suite.

EMPLOYMENT CONDITIONS
Temporary through 6/30/2021 at 20 hours per week. $17/hr. Remote work allowed, but some office presence required weekly. Hiring procedures will be consistent with current St. James Cathedral practices, and with the policies of the Archdiocese of Seattle.
