The Holy Names Award
January 23, 2005

The Holy Names award is given to a civic and church leader who has been an inspiration to others and has believed in the SNJM mission of education and justice.

I am in your midst as one who serves
(Luke 22:27)

We honor you as a faith-filled priest and leader of our Archdiocese.  Your life speaks to us of the words that we read in the oculus over the altar at St. James Cathedral:  I am in your midst as one who serves.

I am in your midst as one who serves the Church.  You have helped to lead this Archdiocese, as Chancellor, as Vicar General, as Cathedral Pastor, for nearly 40 years.  You have modeled collaborative ministry with lay leadership.  You have been an unfailing supporter of the ministry of women religious in the Archdiocese of Seattle.  Through your support of Catholic education, you have been a true partner in mission with the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary.

I am in your midst as one who serves the Community.  You have helped to build relationships between church leaders in Seattle, both Christian and non-Christian.  You have made our Cathedral Church a gathering place for the entire community in times of crisis.  You have courageously spoken out on behalf of peace and justice.  Through music and arts, education and outreach, you have welcomed all people to God's house.

I am in your midst as one who serves the Poor.  You have been a friend to the poor in Seattle for decades.  You have developed innovative programs, like the Hunthausen Fund, to serve their needs.  You have opened the doors of the Cathedral to the homeless through the Winter Shelter program.  You continue to show us how to live as Jesus did, in our midst as one who serves.

So with profound gratitude we, the Sisters of the Holy Names of Jesus and Mary, joyfully present our greatest honor to the Very Reverend Michael G. Ryan.
