In Your Midst

July 2004

This August 9-13, St. James will host its third annual Schola Cantorum Choir Camp for young people ages 10-16. This is a great learning experience for boys and girls, not only those who already sing in one of our six youth choirs, but for those with no singing experience at all. Each day begins with morning prayer. In addition to rehearsals and musicianship classes, there are classes on subjects like saints, Cathedral art, church history, and more. Other activities include performances by guest musicians, an organ demonstration, and a Cathedral tour that lets campers explore parts of the Cathedral few have ever seen, from the sub-basement to the towers. The week culminates with the Friday 12:10pm Mass, where the campers serve as liturgical musicians. The camp prepares children for their participation in the St. James Youth Music Program throughout the year. Space is limited so sign up early! Thanks to generous patrons, some scholarships are available. Contact the Music Office, 206-382-4874.

Above, Cathedral Associate Organist Clint Kraus at the keyboard, and Stacey Sunde, Director of Schola Cantorum and Jubilate!, rehearse campers for singing at Mass.  Below, left:  Campers are recognized throughout the week for special accomplishments and achievements.  Here Dominique Porcincula is named "Saint for a Day."  On the right, campers enjoy hot fudge sundaes with new friends at their end-of-the-week party.
