TEE OFF FOR FUN AND CHARITY

Summer 2000

In This Issue:
Would you invite 144 friends for a round of golf on your 79th birthday?

Archbishop Raymond G. Hunthausen thinks golfing is a great way to celebrate birthdays and he will tee off the Fourth Annual Raymond G. Hunthausen Charity Golf Tournament on his birthday, August 21, at the Plateau Golf & Country Club.

The potential for miracles seems to be unlimited. A hole in one? Celebrity appearances? Fabulous prizes? Maybe even a giant torch to illuminate the world? Oops, that’s just the candles on the cake!

But perhaps the real miracle has already begun. It was just four years ago on a late May afternoon under cloudy skies and a healthy dose of Seattle drizzle, that Archbishop Hunthausen along with 100 friends, parishioners, and even some perfect strangers, launched a new St. James Cathedral tradition — the Annual Archbishop Raymond G. Hunthausen Charity Golf Tournament. The purpose of the tournament is to combine the Archbishop’s favorite pastime with an opportunity to raise funds for the Cathedral.

As a result of our first three tournaments, nearly 500 golfers and 120 corporate sponsors have joined forces to raise money in excess of $100,000. Through our parish’s active ministries, St. James Cathedral has been able to turn these charitable dollars into vital services: education for our inner-city children, care for the frail and elderly in the downtown area, and food and shelter for those in our city who are least able to help themselves.

With our Fourth Annual Hunthausen Tournament just around the corner, the goal is to keep the miracle going and growing — raising more funds, providing more services. And because this birthday party and tournament is indeed a day to celebrate, it promises to be an event with special surprises and unusual opportunities for both sponsors and players.

As in previous years, the day begins with a shotgun start at 11 AM and includes lunch, awards banquet, and mini-auction. Jeff Meder, tournament chairman, reminds players that the tournament traditionally sells out early and registrations are accepted on a first come basis. To join the Archbishop on August 21 as either a participant or sponsor, pick up your registration and sponsorship forms at the Cathedral office or call 206-382-4284.

Mary Ann Millican is Director of Development for St. James Cathedral.
