In Fall, 2027, Father Gary Lazzeroni will lead a parish pilgrimage to Spain and Portugal. The journey will begin in Barcelona and end in Lisbon. On the way, we’ll have opportunities to pray, learn, and celebrate together. A highlight will be walking short portions of the Camino de Santiago de Compostela.
 
DAY 1 October 4, 2027 Monday
Depart SeaTac for Barcelona, Spain.
 
Day 2, October 5, 2027 Tuesday
After arriving in Barcelona, we’ll board our bus and be on our way for an orientation tour.
 
Day 3, October 6, 2027 Wednesday
We’ll begin our day with a visit to Antonio Gaudi's masterpiece, Sagrada Familia. We’ll have Mass at the Tomb of Gaudi. After Mass, we’ll visit Montjuic Hill, the site of the 1992 Olympics, and enjoy a spectacular view over the city. Then, we’ll continue to Las Ramblas to stroll in the Gothic Quarter. Independent lunch and afternoon at leisure. In the evening, we’ll enjoy a special dinner and Flamenco Show.
 
Day 4, October 7, 2027 Thursday
This morning, we’ll leave Barcelona to visit the Abbey of Montserrat. For over a thousand years, pilgrims have made their way to the Benedictine Shrine of the Cherished Black Madonna. We’ll celebrate Mass at this storied Shrine. Time will be given to prayers and reflection in the Abbey. This afternoon, we’ll continue to Zaragoza. Upon arrival we’ll visit the Basilica of Our Lady of the Pillar, an important pilgrimage site.
 
Day 5, October 8, 2027 Friday
This morning, we’ll leave Zaragoza for Segovia (4-hour bus ride), where St. Teresa founded her ninth convent in 1574. The foundation’s first Mass was celebrated by St. John of the Cross. We will visit the convent and celebrate Mass. After Mass, time will be given to venerate the remains of St. John of the Cross in the convent's church. We’ll enjoy a stroll in the Old Quarter of Segovia known for its Roman aqueduct, cathedral, and spectacular view of the Alcázar fortress from the Eresma River. After our visit we’ll continue on to Ávila (one-hour-bus-ride).
 
Day 6, October 9, 2027 Saturday
This morning, we’ll visit Ávila, a World Heritage City, completely encircled by eleventh-century walls. This is the birthplace of St. Teresa, reformer of the Carmelite order, and a great writer, mystic, and Doctor of the Church. During our stay in Ávila, we will visit and pray at the key sites associated with her life and work. We’ll visit the Convent of St. Teresa, built over the house where she was born. Continue to the Monastery of the Incarnation, where Teresa lived for the first 27 years of her religious life and for three years during her term of prioress beginning in 1571. Celebrate Mass in the chapel, which commemorates the “transverberation,” or piercing, of St. Teresa’s heart. After Mass, visit the Convent of San Jose, the first monastery of Discalced Carmelites founded by St. Teresa. In the afternoon, we’ll leave Ávila and travel north along the Camino to León (three-hour-bus-ride), the capital of Christian Spain at the start of the Reconquest. Overnight in Leon.
 
Day 7, October 10, 2027 Sunday
This morning, we’ll have a guided visit of León. Visit the Cathedral, dedicated to Mary, Mother of Jesus, one of the most beautiful in Spain. Daylight filters through over 12,000 square feet of stained-glass windows. Celebrate Mass in the Cathedral.

In the afternoon, we’ll leave Leon and travel to Santibáñez de Valdeiglesias where we will have the opportunity to walk a 7.5-mile portion of the Camino to Santiago de Compostela, from Santibáñez to Astorga. From Astorga, we’ll continue as a group to Santiago de Compostela.
 
Day 8, October 11, 2027 Monday
Breakfast at our hotel. This morning, we will walk another portion of the “Camino de Santiago” (pilgrim way of St. James) from Avenida de los Concheiros to Cruz de San Pedro and on to Puerta del Carmen, Rua Casa Reales, and Azabacheria. We’ll plan to arrive at the Cathedral in time to participate at the Pilgrim Mass at the Cathedral’s high altar. See the botafumeiro, a massive thurible that hangs by means of a system of pulleys from the roof of the Cathedral. The relics of St. James repose in the high altar. Pilgrims can follow the centuries-old tradition of climbing the stairs behind the altar to embrace the golden statue of the saint. Below the statue is the crypt that contains the bones of St. James. In the afternoon, we'll have free time to explore Santiago de Compostela.
 
Day 9, October 12, 2027 Tuesday
This morning we’ll check out of our hotel and drive south to the city of Porto with its historic center, the Ribeira district, a UNESCO World Heritage site.
Enjoy a wine tasting of the Douro Valley with light lunch. The balance of the day at leisure to enjoy Porto. Overnight in Porto.
 
Day 10, October 13, 2027 Wednesday
This morning, we’ll have a walking tour of the Ribeira district, with its narrow, cobbled streets dotted with small bars and eateries. Beside the Douro River, Praça da Ribeira square is lined with colorful 18th-century townhouses, while the neoclassical landmark, Palácio da Bolsa, is known for its ornate interiors. We’ll visit the breathtaking Porto Cathedral, dedicated to the Assumption of Our Lady. Celebrate Mass at the Cathedral.

In the afternoon, we’ll continue to Fátima, where the Blessed Mother appeared in 1917 to three shepherd children. After dinner at our hotel, we'll join the 9:30 pm Rosary in the Chapel of the Apparitions and candlelight procession.
 
Day 11, October 14, 2027 Thursday
After breakfast at our hotel, we will celebrate Mass in the Chapel of the Apparitions. Afterward, our guide will take us on a tour of the Shrine of Fátima, built on the site of the apparitions of Our Lady of Fátima to the three shepherd children, Lucia, Jacinta, and Francisco. Visit the tombs of the child saints of Fátima, the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary, and the Basilica of the Holy Trinity. We will then visit Aljustrel, the hamlet where the three children lived, as well as Valinhos, where Our Lady appeared after the children’s return from prison. We will also visit the church where the children were baptized. Lunch is on your own. The rest of the day will be free for prayer and rest. After dinner at the hotel, we can join the 9:30 pm Rosary in the Chapel of the Apparitions and candlelight procession.
 
Day 12, October 15, 2027 Friday
This morning, we leave Fatima to visit Lisbon. Upon arrival, we’ll have an orientation tour of the Belem Quarter: Belem Tower, 25 April Bridge, Discoveries Monument, and St. Jerome’s Monastery. We’ll continue on to visit the Church of St. Anthony in Lisbon, where in 1195, the patron saint of Portugal was born. Continue to Lisbon Cathedral and see the baptismal font where Anthony was baptized. Celebrate Mass at the Cathedral. Lunch and the afternoon on your own. In the evening, we'll enjoy a farewell dinner.
 
Day 13, October 16, Saturday
After an early breakfast, we’ll be transferred to Lisbon Airport for our return flight to Seattle.
