On Easter Sunday, 2019, terrorists bombed several churches and hotels in
Sri Lanka. Today, Father Ryan offered Mass for the victims of these
attacks. We were joined by many members of the ecumenical and interfaith
community, who came to join us in solidarity with the people of Sri
Lanka.
Muslim and Buddhist leaders spread the light at the end of the liturgy.
Imam Jamal Rahman, a good friend of the Cathedral, brings the light to
Father Ryan.
We
are immensely grateful to our friends of many faiths who came to join us
in prayer.
"For the healing of the nations, Lord, we pray with one accord..."
Following the service, we stood in silence in the courtyard while the
funeral toll sounded from the Cathedral's bell tower.
The
Muslim community brought a wonderful gift of flowers to share with their
Christian neighbors.
We pray for the victims
of the bombings in Sri Lanka Blessed are you
when they insult you and persecute you and utter every kind of evil
against you falsely because of me. Rejoice and be glad, for your
reward will be great in heaven. Thus they persecuted the prophets
who were before you. Matthew 5:11-12
O God, in your silence every
anguished cry is heard; each person is created in your image, all
peoples are precious in your sight. Receive into your peace the
victims of persecution and hear the lament of those who mourn their
killing. Keep their memory always before us and rid every heart of
violence and vengeance, that hatred may be banished from the face of
the earth and the family of nations brought together in peace. We
ask this through Christ our Lord. ICEL, 1998
