Each year, the Chrism Mass gathers the Archdiocesan community for the
blessing of the holy oils to be used in celebrations of the sacraments
throughout the year: the Oil of the Sick, used in the Anointing of the
Sick; the Oil of Catechumens, for the blessing of candidates for
baptism; and the Sacred Chrism, used in the sacraments of Baptism,
Confirmation, and Holy Orders, as well as in the dedication of altars
and churches.
In his homily, Archbishop Sartain reminded all of us, priests and people
alike, that every priest is ordained for us.
Unique to the Chrism Mass is the Renewal of Priestly Promises of the
priests of the Archdiocese of Seattle. Each year they recommit
themselves to the promises they made at the time of their Ordination.
In the Prayer of the Faithful, we pray for all whose lives will be
touched by the holy oils about to be blessed.
A lay minister to the homebound and hospitalized carries the Oil of the
Sick.
Cathedral youth carry banners they created in last summer's art camp.
Newly-ordained priest, Father Justin Ryan, carries the Oil for the
Sacred Chrism. He is accompanied by a Confirmation candidate who carries
the perfumed essence which will be added to this most sacred of the
three oils.
Archbishop blesses the Oil of Catechumens.
Archbishop adds the essence to the Chrism.
Archbishop breathes over the Chrism, an ancient liturgical gesture which
suggests the Spirit of God, breathed over the waters at the dawn of
creation.
The Deacons of the Archdiocese pour out the newly-blessed oils to be
distributed to every parish across the Archdiocese.
