On May 31, 2017, Msgr. Daniel Henry Mueggenborg of the Diocese of Tulsa,
was ordained a bishop at St. James Cathedral, to serve as auxiliary
bishop to Archbishop Sartain. Bishops from across the region joined him
for this joyful and historic moment in the life of the Church.

Cardinal Roger Mahony, Archbishop Emeritus of Los Angeles, joined in the
celebration. He was assisted by our own Father Kyle Manglona, who
served as his chaplain.

The procession of priests stretched from the Cathedral doors all the way
down Ninth Avenue!

Cathedral servers carried the miter and crosier to be presented to the
new bishop during the rite.

Seminarian servers assisted at the liturgy.

The Knights of Columbus formed an honor guard, standing at attention as
the endless procession of priests and bishops entered the Cathedral.

Msgr. Mueggenborg arrives at the Cathedral, attended by two priests of
the Archdiocese of Seattle, Father Zender and Father Bawyn.

The Apostolic Nuncio, Archbishop Christophe Pierre, joined the
celebration, visiting St. James Cathedral for the first time.

Francis, to the entire congregation.

As in the ordination of a deacon or a priest, the new bishop prostrates
himself before the altar as the Litany of Saints is sung.

During the Litany of Saints some of Msgr. Mueggenborg's favorite saints
were invoked, including the newly-beatified Blessed Stanley Rother, a
priest from Oklahoma who was martyred in Central America, and who helped
to inspire Msgr. Mueggenborg's vocation to the priesthood.

The laying on of hands, signifying the conferral of the gift of the Holy
Spirit, is the heart of the rite of ordination.

At the ordination of a bishop, it is an ancient custom for the principal
consecrator to be joined by two other bishops who act as
co-consecrators: on the left, Bishop Eusebio Elizondo, our own
auxiliary bishop, and on the right, Bishop David Konderla, Bishop of
Tulsa, Oklahoma.

the new bishop. Archbishop Beltran ordained Msgr. Mueggenborg to the
priesthood nearly thirty years ago!

All the bishops present join in the laying on of hands.

The prayer of ordination

Two deacons hold the book of the Gospels over the head of the new bishop
during the Prayer of Ordination. This signifies that the preaching of
the Gospel is at the heart of the ministry of bishop.

The Sacred Chrism is used in many of the sacraments: Baptism,
Confirmation, the Ordination of Priests, as well as in the Dedication of
Altars and of Churches. In the Rite of Ordination of a Bishop, the
principal consecrator pours the oil abundantly on the head of the new
bishop.

Bishop Mueggenborg's sister and nephews assisted during the rite,
presenting the ring, miter, and crosier--the insignia of the bishop.

Archbishop Sartain and Bishop Elizondo lead Bishop Mueggenborg through
the Cathedral as he blesses the assembly for the first time as a bishop.

The wonderful floral arrangements were prepared by Father Steve Sallis,
Pastor of Sacred Heart Parish in Bellevue.

Bishop Mueggenborg addressed all those present at the conclusion of the
Mass, thanked all who have been part of his life and ministry, and asked
for our prayers.

The procession at the end of a long and joyful celebration for the
Archdiocese of Seattle!

Cardinal Mahony, and the concelebrating Archbishops, Bishops, and Abbot
join Archbishop Sartain and Bishop Mueggenborg on the steps at the end
of the Mass.

...and the bishops are joined by a small army of servers who assisted
during the liturgy! A huge thank you to all the servers,
greeters, musicians, readers, ushers, icon-bearers and others who made
this great day possible.

The new bishop is joined by family at the reception in Cathedral Hall.
Welcome to Seattle, Bishop Mueggenborg! Ad multos annos!
