The Chrism Mass brings together priests and people from across the
Archdiocese for the blessing and consecration of the holy oils.
Father Ryan greets the Archbishop at the Ceremonial Doors at the
beginning of the liturgy.
At this Chrism Mass of 2017, Archbishop Sartain shared joyful news for
the Archdiocese of Seattle: Pope Francis has appointed Msgr.
Daniel Mueggenborg, a priest of the Diocese of Tulsa, as auxiliary
bishop. He will be ordained in the Cathedral on May 31 at 2:00pm.
Welcoming our new auxiliary!
The presentation of the oils. Three oils are used by the Church in the
celebration of the sacraments: the Oil of the Sick for the
Anointing of the Sick, the Oil of Catechumens for candidates for
baptism, and the Sacred Chrism for the sacraments of baptism,
confirmation, and ordination, as well as for the consecration of altars
and the dedication of churches.
The procession of oils
Archbishop breathes over the Sacred Chrism--an ancient sign which
recalls the Spirit of God, breathed over the waters at the time of
creation.
