As we take in news of another senseless act of violence, this time in Nice, France,
we pray with the prophet Jeremiah:

"If I walk out into the field,
look! those slain by the sword;
If I enter the city, look! victims of famine...
Why have you struck us a blow that cannot be healed? ...
We wait for peace, to no avail;
for a time of healing, but terror comes instead...
Do not reject us, for your name's sake...
Remember! Do not break your covenant with us."
(Jeremiah 14:18-21)

Eternal rest grant unto them, O Lord,
and let perpetual light shine upon them.
