At the annual Chrism Mass, the oils to be used in sacramental celebrations at
Easter and throughout the coming year are blessed by Archbishop Sartain.
Cathedral youth musicians led us in song.
The oils are processed through the Cathedral and then blessed by the Archbishop.
Children with colorful streamers accompany the procession.
The Oil of Catechumens is used to anoint catechumens preparing for baptism at
the Easter Vigil, and is also used to anoint infants before baptism.
Newly ordained priest Father Michael Wagner presents the Oil for the Sacred
Chrism. A young candidate for confirmation accompanies him. The
Chrism is used in many different important rites of the Church--the sacraments
of baptism, confirmation, and holy orders, as well as dedication of new
churches.
The consecration of the Sacred Chrism is unique among the rites of the Church:
the Archbishop not only speaks words of blessing, but he breathes over the oil,
an ancient gesture that recalls God's spirit breathed into creation.
Deacons of the Archdiocese distribute the newly blessed and consecrated oils to
pastors and parish representatives from across the Archdiocese of Seattle.
Half moon and blossoms. Easter falls on the first Sunday following the
first full moon after the equinox... just a few days away!
