This morning, we received word that Pope Benedict XVI has appointed the Most
Reverend J. Peter Sartain as the next Archbishop of Seattle.
Archbishop-Elect Sartain celebrated a Mass of Thanksgiving in the Cathedral at
11:00am. He greeted many of the priests of the Archdiocese in the Chapel
before Mass.
Archbishop Brunett, Archbishop-Elect Sartain, Auxiliary Bishop Elizondo, and
Father Ryan in the sacristy before Mass.
Archbishop Brunett welcomed Archbishop-Elect Sartain at the beginning of the
Mass.
Archbishop-Elect Sartain preached from the Cathedral's ambo for the first time.
In his homily, the Archbishop-Elect spoke of the Eucharist, the source and
summit of our Christian lives. He shared the following prayer which the
Diocese of Joliet has been praying for several months:
Jesus, may all that is you flow into me.
May your Body and Blood be my food and drink.
May your passion and death be my strength and life.
Jesus, with you by my side enough has been given.
May the shelter I seek be the shadow of your cross.
Let me not run from the love which you offer,
but hold me safe from the forces of evil.
On each of my dyings shed your light and your love.
Keep calling to me until that day comes,
when, with your saints, I may praise you forever. Amen.
At the end of Mass, the Archbishop-Elect thanked Archbishop Brunett for his warm
welcome and his thirteen years of ministry in Western Washington.
Welcome to our new Archbishop! The date for the solemn Mass of
Installation will be announced soon.
