Palm Sunday, 2010. As the 10 o'clock Mass begins, we
gather--one thousand strong!--in O'Dea Gym for the traditional blessing of
palms.
Tyrone Heade pipes us into the gym.
Seattleites are never afraid of a little rain, but just as the
procession began, the clouds broke, and the sun made a brief appearance!
Trumpets sound as the liturgy begins.
Singing "Hosanna in excelsis!" we process with palm branches,
as Catholics have done on this day for centuries.
The singing of Psalm 22 leads us into the reading of the Passion
according to St. Luke: "My God, my God, why have you abandoned me?"
On Palm Sunday, the Passion is read by three voices, a
narrator, Jesus, and the crowd.
Holy Week has begun!
