As the nation prepares to celebrate the birthday of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.,
people from across the Archdiocese of Seattle gathered in the Cathedral to honor
him. Dancers from Immaculate Conception Parish performed during the
prelude.
Young people from around the Archdiocese carried icons of the saints of Africa.
Archbishop Brunett incenses the altar at the beginning of Mass. The altar
is draped with a traditional kente cloth from Africa.
A young girl looks over her dad's shoulder as the gospel choir sings the
prelude.
At the conclusion of the liturgy, members of the planning committee presented
the Archbishop with the gift of an African American Bible in recognition of his
support for African American and African Catholics in the Archdiocese of
Seattle.
The Mass ended with a rousing rendition of "We Shall Overcome" by the festival
choir.
