On Saturday, June 7, 2008, Archbishop Brunett ordained three men to the
priesthood: Cal Christiansen, Mark Guzman, and Jack Shrum. Here,
Archbishop Brunett greets the three to be ordained on the front steps of the
Cathedral.

Jack Shrum is greeted by Father Tony Bawyn; Cal Christiansen is on the right.
Seminarians for the Archdiocese of Seattle serve at the Mass, which gathers
family and friends of those to be ordained, as well as more than a hundred
priests and Catholics from across Western Washington.
Bishop Elizondo, Vicar for Vocations, introduces the three candidates, and
testifies that they have prepared long and hard for ordination and have been
found worthy.
For these three men, this day is the culmination of years of study and prayer,
and the beginning of a new life.
The candidates "resolve to fulfill the office of priest in accord with the mind
of Christ and of the Church"; each also promises respect and obedience to the
Archbishop and his successors.
The assembly kneels as the candidates for ordination prostrate themselves on the
altar. We call on the angels and saints to pray for us at this great
moment.
"The gift of the Holy Spirit for service as priest is conferred on the
candidates through the laying on of hands in silence."
Each of the priests present lays hands on the three candidates in turn.

The newly ordained are vested with stole and chasuble.
The Archbishop anoints the hands of the new priest with the oil of Sacred
Chrism.
Friends and family of the newly ordained bring forward the gifts of bread and
wine for the sacrifice of the Mass.
"The Archbishop presents the new priests with the gifts of the assembly, bread
and wine, to be offered to God in the Liturgy of the Eucharist."
The newly ordained exchange the "Kiss of Peace" with all the clergy present.
The Liturgy of the Eucharist. The newly ordained concelebrate the Mass for
the first time.
At the conclusion of the Mass, the new priests receive a solemn blessing from
the Archbishop.
Each of the new priests blesses the Archbishop in turn.
The newly ordained join Archbishop Brunett on the altar in bestowing a blessing
on the people.
The assembly applauds as the newly ordained go forth "to love and serve the
Lord."
