The ordination of priests is a joyful moment
for the entire Archdiocese of Seattle. The liturgy begins with
the sprinkling rite, a reminder of baptism, the sacrament by which
we have all become members of "a royal priesthood, a holy nation."
Seminarian servers surround the ambo as Deacon
Bill Eckert proclaims the Gospel: "You do not belong to the
world any more than I belong to the world."
Bishop Elizondo, Vicar for Vocations, presents
the candidates, who are then formally chosen for ordination by
Archbishop Brunett. This call is ratified by the assembly.
They respond, "Thanks be to God!" and express their approval with
thunderous applause.
Those to be ordained prostrate themselves on
the altar platform as the entire assembly kneels in prayer, begging
the intercession of the Blessed Virgin Mary and all the saints
through the ages.
The laying of hands, the heart of the ordination rite.
The priests encircle the altar as Archbishop
prays the solemn prayer of ordination over Gary Lazzeroni and Mel
Strazicich.
The newly ordained priests are vested in the
stole and chasuble for the first time. The chasuble is the
priestly garment worn only for the celebration of Mass.
The priests are presented with the bread and wine with the
instruction to offer them to God on behalf of His holy people.
Archbishop Brunett extends to the newly
ordained the sign of peace.
The newly ordained gather around the altar with
Archbishop Brunett and Auxiliary Bishops Elizondo and Tyson and join
in the Eucharistic prayer for the first time.
At the conclusion of Mass, Archbishop Brunett
kneels before the newly ordained to receive their first blessing.
Congratulations, Father Gary Lazzeroni and Father Mel Strazicich! Ad
