May is Mary's Month! On this first weekend in May we honor Mary in a
special way. At the 5:30pm Mass on Saturday, children from the Polish
community carry roses to honor Mary.
One by one the children place their flowers before an image of Our Lady of
Czestochowa, beloved icon of the Polish people. The Polish choir,
Vivat Musica, under the direction of Anna Sawicki, sang at the Mass.
On Sunday, following the Noon Mass, Father Ryan and the children of the
Cathedral parish led a rosary procession through the Cathedral. The
procession concluded around the beautiful image of Mary in the Archbishop Murphy
Courtyard.
The image of Mary was crowned with flowers. "Hail, Holy Queen, mother of
mercy, our life, our sweetness, and our hope!"
Just in time for Mary's month, the Shrine of the Blessed Virgin Mary was
thoroughly cleaned and repainted. While the beloved image of Mary with the
Child Jesus is being restored, the historic image of Our Lady of Seattle finds a
home in the shrine.
