Our celebration of Pentecost began with our
parish retreat with retired Archbishop Raymond Hunthausen on
Saturday morning. Archbishop Hunthausen also presided and
preached at the vigil Mass of Pentecost.
At the 10:00 o'clock Mass, the Cathedral Choir sings the introit.
"The Spirit of the Lord has filled the whole wide earth, alleluia!"
On Pentecost Sunday, a special sequence is sung following the second
reading: Veni, Sancte Spiritus. This hymn is traditionally
called "the golden sequence" because of its great beauty.
Father Ryan asks, "It's Pentecost. Do you feel different?"
Pentecost is the perfect time to celebrate the Sacrament of Baptism.
"I baptize you in the name of the Father, and of the Son,
and of the Holy Spirit!"
The Easter season concludes with the celebration of Solemn Vespers
of Pentecost on Sunday afternoon. The Neophytes baptized at
Easter wear their white robes for the last time at this service.
The Women of St. James Schola lend the beauty of their voices to
this traditional prayer in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament.
