WELCOME, VISITORS! If you are a visitor to the Cathedral, we want you to know how welcome you are – whether you have come from another part of the country, from across the world, or simply from another parish here in the Archdiocese. For more information about the parish, to register, or to ask a question, visit our Sunday Help Desk at Coffee Hour. A Cathedral staff person will be on hand to assist you. Be sure to stop by the Cathedral Bookstore after Mass for a wide selection of Cathedral souvenirs as well as Catholic books and gifts.

FOR YOUR SAFETY. At each of the weekend Masses a Seattle police officer is present on the Cathedral campus.

ON THE COVER Jesus carries his cross. Detail of the Ceremonial Bronze Doors, St. James Cathedral. Ulrich Henn, artist.

You’re invited to a no-strings-attached gathering to ask questions and fine out more on Wednesday, September 4, at 7:00pm in the Fireside Room (lower level of the Pastoral Outreach Center at 907 Columbia Street). Please use the courtyard entrance to access the Fireside Room. All are welcome, no RSVP needed.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL THANKS YOU for your donations to the special collection taken for SVdP on the third Sunday of the month. Without your support, we could not provide material aid to residents of St James parish who call the SVdP Helpline (206-767-6449). Whether you drop a single dollar bill or many dollars into the SVdP collection basket, mail us a check or donate to SVdP online, we know it is important to you to help our neighbors in need. Each time we make a home visit to one of those neighbors, we have the privilege of accepting their deep gratitude for your help. Thank you! Information, Bob Clifford, 206-718-4158.

BABYSITTING is available for children up to four years of age on Sundays during the 10:00am and Noon Masses, during baptism preparation classes, and during special events for parents and families. The program is located in the Mother Cabrini Room on the first floor of the Pastoral Outreach Center.

REGISTER FOR YOUTH CONFIRMATION NOW. Preparation classes for the Sacrament of Confirmation will begin Sunday, September 15 for high school age candidates (grades 9-12). Keep an eye out for a mailing with more information on youth confirmation or contact Curtis Leighton, Youth Minister. To download the registration form, visit www.stjames-cathedral.org/kids and click the link that says “CFF Registration”; be sure to mark the box that says “My child is ready to prepare for Confirmation.” (Please note that the adult Confirmation program begins in February 2020.)

A WEEKLY TIP ON CARING FOR OUR COMMON HOME. Choosing ecologically friendly alternatives to the brown paper bag and other disposable lunch items can make a big difference for the planet and for your wallet. Packing a reusable, waste free lunch can save more than $400 per student, per school year.

IMPORTANT GARDEN SAFETY MEETING. The Cathedral Kitchen Garden will be hosting a potluck on Thursday, August 22, where we will discuss safety protocol and various things to keep in mind when working in the Garden. We will kick off the evening in the Garden on the corner of Madison St. and Terry Ave. with food at 6:30pm, and discussion at 7:00pm. This event is VERY important for anyone who is or would like to work as a volunteer. Bring a dish to share if you can! We love foods that are sustainable, local, and/or healthy. RSVP encouraged. Information, Dylan Hogan, 206-382-4235.

FIRST COMMUNION PREPARATION customarily begins when a child is five years old and/or in the 1st grade. St James also offers First Communion preparation for older children as well as for children with special needs. Each of these processes begins the 2nd Sunday of September. A brief family meeting is required before beginning preparation. Information, Brenda Bellamy, Director of Children’s Faith Formation, 206-274-3108.

Opportunities to Serve

SHARE YOUR LOVE OF GOD AND THE CHURCH WITH THE CHILDREN OF ST JAMES. Join the team of catechists in the Children’s Faith Formation program as a lead, assistant or substitute. Classes meet most Sundays, September through June from 11:00am to 11:45am. Training, support and materials provided. Required 2019-2020 kick-off meeting on Saturday, September 7. Information, Brenda Bellamy, 206-274-3108.

COMMUNION MINISTRY. We have several openings for communion ministers to patients in Swedish Hospital and two First Hill senior living centers. This is an important ministry which makes it possible for people who are unable to join us for Sunday Mass to receive Holy Communion regularly. There are opportunities to serve on weekdays and weekends. All training is provided. Information, Corinna Laughlin, 206-264-2086.

LITURGICAL MINISTERS NEEDED. We are always in need of parishioners to join our wonderful teams of liturgical ministers at the Cathedral as ushers and greeters, readers, and Extraordinary Ministers of Holy Communion. Getting involved in a liturgical ministry is a great way to serve your community, immerse yourself in the liturgy, and get to know some of your fellow parishioners! Information, Corinna Laughlin, 206-264-2086.

SEEKING VOLUNTEERS FOR CITIZENSHIP APPLICATION ASSISTANCE. Immigrant Assistance is seeking volunteers interested in assisting prospective U.S. citizens to complete naturalization applications at Citizenship Workshops held throughout the City of Seattle. Attorney or paralegal experience is preferred but not required. Training and supervision will be provided by our immigrant Legal Services Coordinator. Comprehensive training includes a webinar and two in-person training sessions. Information, Caroline Okello, 206 382-4511.

JOIN THE ST. JAMES WINTER SHELTER TEAM! Even though the City of Seattle is moving people into permanent housing, there is still not enough. None of us can alone can help the thousands in need of housing. The government, non-profits, religious institutions and businesses must work together. St. James Cathedral offers emergency shelter on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday nights from October through April. One of the Corporal Works of Mercy is to Shelter the Homeless. If you are available one night a month, please consider joining the Winter Shelter team. Information, Patrick Barredo, 206-382-4515.

PARISH REMEMBRANCE: Throughout the year, because we are the Cathedral Church, we remember in prayer at Mass and Vespers each of the parishes and missions of the Archdiocese of Seattle on a Sunday near their feast day. This week we pray for the parishes of St. Pius X in Mountlake Terrace, Queen of Heaven in Tacoma, and Queen of Angels in Port Angeles.
