WELCOME, VISITORS! If you are a visitor to the Cathedral, we want you to know how welcome you are – whether you have come from another part of the country, from across the world, or simply from another parish here in the Archdiocese. For more information about the parish, to register, or to ask a question, visit our Sunday Help Desk at Coffee Hour. A Cathedral staff person will be on hand to assist you. Be sure to stop by the Cathedral Bookstore after Mass for a wide selection of Cathedral souvenirs as well as Catholic books and gifts.

FOR YOUR SAFETY. At each of the weekend Masses a Seattle police officer is present on the Cathedral campus.

ON THE COVER Doves & Chalice. Chapel stained-glass window, St. James Cathedral. Charles Connick, artist.

FLOWERS AT THE ALTAR are offered in loving memory of Tiffany Head on the 2nd anniversary of her death, from her family. Flowers at the North Transept Shrine of the Blessed Virgin Mary are from our own Cathedral Kitchen Garden. Floral offerings are a wonderful way to remember a deceased loved one, celebrate an anniversary, or give thanks for a prayer that has been answered. We currently have many weekends open for floral offerings, including September 1 and 15, and October 13, 20, and 27. Information, Jane Mueller, 206-622-3559.

SEEKING AUCTION DONATIONS. The Hunthausen Golf Tournament is just two weeks away (Monday, August 26) and we are urgently seeking items for our silent auction benefiting the Cathedral Kitchen. Gift cards of all kinds are welcome (consider picking up a gift card or two at Costco or wherever you shop), along with bottles of wine or spirits, and event tickets (theatre, sports, etc.). Gift cards of any value ($5 and up!) are also needed. Would you be able to donate something? Information, Maria Laughlin, 206-382-4284.

GREGORY PETERSON ORGAN RECITAL Friday, August 16 at 7:30pm, organist Gregory Peterson, Professor of Music and College Organist at Luther College, Decorah, Iowa, will present a concert of music by Bach, Howells, Franck, Debussy, Near, and Craig Phillips. Passes are $18 suggested donation, available online at www.stjames-cathedral.org/music or at the door. Greet the artist and enjoy a free gelato reception in the south Cathedral courtyard after the concert. Information, musicoffice@stjames-cathedral.org or 206-382-4874.

REGISTER FOR YOUTH CONFIRMATION NOW. Preparation classes for the Sacrament of Confirmation will begin Sunday, September 15 for high school age candidates (grades 9-12). Keep an eye out for a mailing with more information on youth confirmation or contact Curtis Leighton, Youth Minister. To download the registration form, visit www.stjames-cathedral.org/kids and click the link that says “CFF Registration”; be sure to mark the box that says “My child is ready to prepare for Confirmation.” (Please note that the adult Confirmation program begins in February 2020.)

HEAR FIRST-HAND ACCOUNTS OF THE BORDER CRISIS IN EL PASO, TEXAS AND JUÁREZ, MEXICO. A few weeks ago, a team of 6 were sent forth from the Cathedral with a blessing, to explore the border situation on a Maryknoll immersion trip. The team is back and will be sharing their experiences and answering questions on Sunday, August 18, 2019, from 11am-1pm, at the Pastoral Outreach Center. RSVP requested. Information, Caroline Okello, 206-382-4511.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL THANKS YOU. We visited a middle-aged woman who had her “dream job” at an upscale local restaurant. The manager gave her good performance evaluations and she was happy. Then the manager was replaced with a new manager who taunted her in a racist manner and soon she was forced to leave her dream job behind. She quickly found a new job but was without income while waiting to start work. With your financial support, we paid enough rent to keep her housed during this difficult time – thank you! Information, Bob Clifford, 206-718-4158.

TAI CHI CLASSES HAVE BEEN SUSPENDED for the remainder of the summer and will resume again in the fall. On behalf of all the Tai Chi students who attended weekly classes for the past six months, we wish to express gratitude to our instructor, Mark Krimmel, PT, DPT for this opportunity.

A WEEKLY TIP ON CARING FOR OUR COMMON HOME. Of the estimated 29 billion gallons of water used daily by households in the US, nearly 9 billion gallons (30%) is used outdoors. In the hot summer months, that percentage often goes up to 70%. You can help change that by replacing part of your lawn with native and drought resistant plants.

Opportunities to Serve

SHARE YOUR LOVE OF GOD AND THE CHURCH WITH THE CHILDREN OF ST JAMES. Join the team of catechists in the Children’s Faith Formation program. Classes meet most Sundays, September through June from 11:00am to 11:45am. Training, support and materials provided. Required 2019-2020 kick-off meeting on Saturday, September 7. Information, Brenda Bellamy, 206-274-3108.

SEEKING VOLUNTEERS FOR CITIZENSHIP APPLICATION ASSISTANCE. Immigrant Assistance is seeking volunteers interested in assisting prospective U.S. citizens to complete naturalization applications at Citizenship Workshops held throughout the City of Seattle. Attorney or paralegal experience is preferred but not required. Training and supervision will be provided by our immigrant Legal Services Coordinator. Comprehensive training includes a webinar and two in-person training sessions. Information, Caroline Okello, 206 382-4511.

JOIN THE ST. JAMES WINTER SHELTER TEAM! Even though the City of Seattle is moving people into permanent housing, there is still not enough. None of us can do it alone to help the thousands in need of housing. The government, non-profits, religious institutions and businesses must work together. St. James Cathedral offers emergency shelter on Friday, Saturday, Sunday and Monday nights from October through April. One of the Corporal Works of Mercy is to Shelter the Homeless. If you are available one night a month, please consider joining the Winter Shelter team. Information, Patrick Barredo, 206-382-4515.

CATHEDRAL CHOIR & WOMEN’S SCHOLA AUDITIONS. Music Director Joseph Adam will be holding auditions over the summer for membership in the Cathedral Choir and the Women of St. James Schola. Cathedral Choir singers must have a good comfort level of reading music, attend Thursday night rehearsals, and sing at the Sunday 10:00am Mass and other liturgical events. The Women of St. James Schola come from many musical backgrounds and skill levels, and meet at 4:00pm on Sundays to sing for 5:30pm Mass. Schola repertoire includes unison chant and 2-3 part motets. Information, Marjorie Bunday, 206-382-4874.

THE CATHEDRAL KITCHEN GARDEN NEEDS YOU. With harvest season right around the corner, we need more regular volunteers to help maintain the Cathedral Kitchen Garden! All of our fresh and organic produce goes toward feeding our food-insecure neighbors at the Cathedral Kitchen. Come and help us grow! Information, Dylan Hogan, 206-382-4235.

PARISH REMEMBRANCE: Throughout the year, because we are the Cathedral Church, we remember in prayer at Mass and Vespers each of the parishes and missions of the Archdiocese of Seattle on a Sunday near their feast day. This week we pray for the parishes of Assumption in Seattle and Bellingham, and Mary, Queen of Peace in Sammamish.
