WELCOME, VISITORS! If you are a visitor to the Cathedral, we want you to know how welcome you are – whether you have come from another part of the country, from across the world, or simply from another parish here in the Archdiocese. For more information about the parish, to register, or to ask a question, visit our Sunday Help Desk at Coffee Hour. A Cathedral staff person will be on hand to assist you. Be sure to stop by the Cathedral Bookstore after Mass for a wide selection of Cathedral souvenirs as well as Catholic books and gifts.

FOR YOUR SAFETY. At each of the weekend Masses a Seattle police officer is present on the Cathedral campus.

ON THE COVER. Christ at the Last Supper. Blessed Sacrament Chapel, St. James Cathedral.

NEW ON THE WEBSITE. If you were unable to be at Archbishop Hunthausen’s funeral services last Tuesday and Wednesday, you can still read or listen to Father Ryan’s homily online. There is an album of photos posted as well.

WINTER SHELTER DONATIONS. If you are travelling this summer, consider bringing home the toiletries that are provided in your hotel rooms. Bring them to Coffee Hour or to the Parish Office so that they can be used by the men who stay at the Winter Shelter. Not only are you keeping a few more plastics out of the garbage, but you are sharing valuable hygiene products with our overnight guests. Thank you!

OUTREACH SUNDAY. Join representatives from several of the Cathedral’s Outreach Ministries at Coffee Hour in Cathedral Hall, today after the 10am Mass. They will be on hand to share some of the work they are doing in our community. You may also want to learn more so that you can become involved!

FROM HIROSHIMA TO HOPE. On Monday August 6, Pax Christi members will attend "From Hiroshima to Hope,” which honors victims of war and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. This annual event begins at 6 pm near the Bathhouse Theater at Green Lake, 7312 West Green Lake Drive North, and includes music, a program, and a floating lantern ceremony. Please consider joining us there. Information, visit www.fromhiroshimatohope.org or call Paul Snow, 206-226-5238.

A WEEKLY TIP ON CARING FOR OUR COMMON HOME. During these warmer summer days, try to use air-conditioning sparingly. AC uses more energy and contributes to the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. It also has been demonstrated to have negative health effects, particularly for those with respiratory issues and some chronic conditions.

Can you help with an item for the auction?

Our annual Hunthausen Dinner and Auction benefiting the Cathedral Kitchen is coming up on Monday, August 27 (see information in this weekend’s bulletin). We are in need of many items for our raffle and silent auction. Please consider donating! Our wish list includes…

  • $25 to $50 gift cards of any kind—Amazon, Starbucks, Safeway, Subway, iTunes, etc.
  • Bottles of wine for our wine roulette
  • Gift certificates to a favorite restaurant

If you have other ideas of items to donate, we would love to hear about them!

Information, Maria Laughlin, 206-382-4284, or Margaret Lynch, 206-382-4288.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL INVITES YOU to stop by our table during Coffee Hour after the 10:00am mass this Sunday to learn more about our outreach ministry. Ask how you or someone you know can get help or how you can donate furniture or other items to SVdP. Other questions about SVdP? Ask us! And if you cannot stop by our table, please contact Bob Clifford, 206-718-4158.

TRANSITION AT THE SOLANUS CASEY CENTER. This week, we say thank you and farewell to Jonathan Prociv, who has been the Program Manager for the Solanus Casey Center for the last six years. During his tenure, the Center has helped clients obtain identification cards, bus passes, service referrals. Most importantly, the Center has been a refuge of hospitality. Thank you Jonny for your leadership, and blessings as you transition to Campus Ministry at Kennedy Catholic High School.

Schola Cantorum is our choir for children grades 3–8 (girls and boys with unchanged voices), and Jubilate! Young Women’s Ensemble is our advanced-level group for girls of high school age. Each ensemble provides the music for one Sunday noon Mass per month, and participates in annual Readings & Carols, Christmas Eve Vigil Mass, and special liturgies throughout the year. Opportunities to Serve

SANDWICH MAKERS NEEDED. The St. Martin de Porres Shelter Outreach Ministry needs a few extra volunteers to make sandwiches for the Second Monday of each month. This is a great opportunity for those with busy work schedules or families with children! Information, Dylan Hogan, 206-382-4235.

OUR CATHEDRAL GROUNDS GUILD is looking for a few volunteers to help with pruning and weeding on the Cathedral campus grounds. Schedule and time commitment flexible. Information, Larry Brouse, 206-382-4280.

THE CATHEDRAL KITCHEN NEEDS A FEW MORE VOLUNTEERS to help with cooking, preparing and serving our meals. We also need a few more substitute gleaners to help when our other gleaners are away. Gleaners go out in the morning, once a week, usually as partners, to four local supermarkets and collect food (fruits, vegetables, milk, deli items, etc.) These items may be used for our daily meals or passed on to St. Mary’s Food Bank. It’s a fun and rewarding outreach! Information, Teddi Callahan, 206-264-2091.

SING WITH CATHEDRAL CHOIR OR WOMEN’S SCHOLA. Have you been considering answering the call to serve in the music ministry at St. James? Now’s your chance! Music Director Joseph Adam will be holding auditions over the summer for membership in the Cathedral Choir (Thursday night rehearsals, sing at 10:00am Mass) and the Women of St. James Schola (meet at 4:00pm on Sundays to sing for 5:30pm Mass). For more information about the required commitment of these ensembles and to schedule an audition, contact Marjorie at musicoffice@stjames-cathedral.org or 206-382-4874.

PARISH REMEMBRANCE: Throughout the year, because we are the Cathedral Church, we remember in prayer at Mass and Vespers each of the parishes and missions of the Archdiocese of Seattle on a Sunday near their feast day. This week we pray for the parishes of St. Mary of the Valley in Monroe, St. Philomena in Des Moines, and St. Lawrence in Raymond.
