WELCOME, SUMMER VISITORS! If you are a visitor to the Cathedral, we want you to know how welcome you are – whether you have come from another part of the country, from across the world, or simply from another parish here in the Archdiocese. For more information about the parish, to register, or to ask a question, visit our Sunday Help Desk at Coffee Hour. A Cathedral staff person will be on hand to assist you. Be sure to stop by the Cathedral Bookstore after Mass for a wide selection of Cathedral souvenirs as well as Catholic books and gifts.

FLOWERS AT THE ALTAR are offered by Bruce Mathey in memory of his father, Charles Mathey.

  • Dinner guests--join us for a wonderful meal at the end of the day ($50 per person)
  • Bottles of wine--we need bottles of wine for our "Wine Roulette." Please consider donating one or two
  • Gift cards--we are looking for restaurant gift cards of all types and sizes for the raffle

GREAT OPPORTUNITY TO BE PART OF THE CATHEDRAL KITCHEN TEAM! The Cathedral Kitchen needs a few more volunteers to help with preparing, serving, and clean-up. Information, Teddi Callahan, 206-264-2091.

ST VINCENT DE PAUL THANKS YOU. We visited a woman who had just moved into housing for low-income seniors after being homeless many years and spending the last eight months in a shelter. She had no furniture so we arranged to deliver a new bed and gave her a voucher so she could buy a small sofa, kitchen table and chairs at a local SVdP thrift store. We later spoke with her case manager at Catholic Community Services and learned that he, too, had promised her a SVdP store voucher. Together, we laughed with great joy when we realized that two Catholic charities had joined together to help turn this woman’s new apartment into a true home. Your donations to SVdP bring joy to those whose lives we are able to change for the better – thank you! Information, Bob Clifford, 206-718-4158.

THIRD SUNDAY SOCIAL. Join other young adults this Sunday evening in the Rectory Parlors for food, drink and fellowship from 6:30-8pm. This month we welcome Christian Downs, a young adult whose experience of church was enlivened by participating in a program called Alpha. He'll join us after Mass for our usual social and to answer questions about getting involved with Alpha here at the Cathedral. Don't miss it! Information, Curtis Leighton, 206-264-2082.

LET GOD TRANSFORM YOUR LIFE so that you can share his mercy with others! If you feel called to deepen your spiritual growth and commitment to serve the people in our midst, Cabrini Ministry Training may be for you! We offer an in depth formation program beginning this October. Learn the communication, listening, and prayer skills needed to share God’s love with those in need. Information, www.cabriniministry.org or 206-760-0583 x3.

VAN DRIVERS NEEDED. Our Sunday van ministry is an important outreach to senior parishioners who would not be able to get to 10:00am Mass on Sunday if it weren’t for our drivers. Right now we have a need for drivers on the second or third Sundays of the month (the commitment is for one Sunday a month). All training provided; background check required. Information, Maria Laughlin, 206-382-4284.

REGISTRATION FOR CHILDREN’S FAITH FORMATION is now open. CONGRATULATIONS AND GOD’S BLESSINGS to the following children, baptized at the Noon Mass last Sunday: Cassius Legend Acacio, Olivia Rose Bacalla, Kayden Ethan Aquino Devera, Andrew Charles Coleman McDonald, and Margot Lenora Tillotson. We welcome with joy these newest members of the family of faith.

REST IN PEACE. Please pray for the repose of the souls of Randy Barrett, Tiffany Head, and Tom McCarthy.

A WEEKLY TIP ON CARING FOR OUR COMMON HOME. “In the family we first learn how to show love and respect for life; we are taught the proper use of things, order and cleanliness, respect for the local ecosystem and care for all creatures... In the family we learn to ask without demanding, to say thank you as an expression of genuine gratitude for what we have been given, to control our aggressivity and greed, and to ask forgiveness when we have caused harm. These simple gestures… help to create a culture of shared life and respect for our surroundings.” (Laudato Si’, 213)

FROM THE HOUSING ADVOCACY COMMITTEE. This year in Seattle and King County, as of January, 2017…

CLIMATE SCIENCE, LAUDATO SI’ & THE NORTHWEST: A RESPONSE OF FAITH FOR THE FUTURE Thursday, September 14, 7:00-8:30pm Wyckoff Auditorium, Seattle University. Jeff Renner, meteorologist at KING TV and member of Mary, Queen of Peace Parish in Sammamish, will discuss the changes he has seen in our climate, the latest science and the compelling call of Pope Francis in Laudato Si’ to Care for Our Common Home.

CATHOLIC RELIEF SERVICES (CRS) IN AFGHANISTAN. It is with deep sadness that CRS announces the death of three beloved colleagues and injuries to two other staff in Afghanistan due to an assault on their vehicle. The incident occurred on August 14, near Chaghcharan, the capital city of Ghor province, an area once relatively peaceful but now home to active Taliban and Islamic State militants. “We are shocked and heartbroken over the loss of our colleagues in Afghanistan,” CRS spokeswoman Megan Gilbert said in a statement. “Our staff dedicate their lives to helping others, and we will always be grateful for their tremendous service to people in need.” “I call on all parties to ensure that those providing humanitarian assistance have safe access to the most vulnerable and can carry out their lifesaving work unhindered,” U.N. humanitarian coordinator in Afghanistan Richard Peeperkorn said in a statement about the CRS attack. CRS provides humanitarian aid to more than 200,000 Afghans, with a focus on agriculture, education, and disaster response. Please keep these staff and their families in your thoughts and prayers. This was written from reports from CRS and Reuters.

CHURCH OF SECOND CHANCES: A FAITHFUL EXPLORATION OF INCARCERATION. Starting in October, the Cathedral will be offering this 8-week series developed by JustFaith Ministries. Together, we will explore the Christian principle of restorative justice, the critical need for comprehensive prison reform, and a faith-based critique of the U.S. prison system. By sharing the stories of incarcerated people through interviews, documentaries, presentations by experts, dialogue, and reflection, Church of Second Chances widens the circle of connection. Information, Patrick Barredo, 206-382-4515.

FOR YOUR SAFETY. It is important for you to know that at each of the weekend Masses a Seattle police officer or a private security guard is present on the Cathedral campus.

PARISH REMEMBRANCE: Throughout the year, because we are the Cathedral Church, we remember in prayer at Mass and Vespers each of the parishes and missions of the Archdiocese of Seattle on a Sunday near their feast day. This week we pray for the parishes of St. Pius X in Mountlake Terrace, Queen of Heaven in Tacoma, and Queen of Angels in Port Angeles.
