The Year of St. Paul... for Kids!

Many artists have imagined what St. Paul might have looked like.  Here are some pictures to look at and think about.

Look at how Andrea Vanni imagined St. Paul.  He holds a sword in one hand to remind us that he gave his life for Christ.  In the other hand, he holds a book, to remind us of his writings.  Look at the determined expression on his face.  What do you think Paul is thinking about?

In real life, St. Paul probably dictated his letters to a secretary, who would write his words down on a scroll.  But this artist, from France, imagined Paul writing the way they did in his own time, with a quill pen.  What kind of a letter do you think Paul is writing?  Notice how Paul’s face is reflected in the shiny surface of the table.

This is a famous icon, or image, by Andrei Rublev, a Russian artist.  You can tell that this icon is old—the hands of Paul and the book he is holding are almost worn away.  Look at Paul’s eyes.  You can tell that Paul is thinking about heaven from the way the artist painted him.

This is a stained glass window from a great Cathedral in France, the Cathedral of Rouen.  The way Paul has one hand on his hip, and the other hand raised towards us, makes you think that Paul is just about to say something.  What do you think Paul would say to us today?
