Meredith Smith, Literacy*
Americorps, studied English Literature at the University of Colorado and
then decided to bring her roots from the Texas prairie to the lush soils
of Seattle. She first got involved with ESL as a volunteer what seems
like a long time ago now.
She tutored locally at Literacy Source and Para Los Niños and then
taught abroad in Peru and upon her return wished to continue teaching
and interacting with adult learners in her community. She excitedly
joined the St. James ESL Program as a Literacy* AmeriCorps member in
August 2009. She offers ESL instruction off-site to small groups of
low-level learners; she works with staff to develop curriculum, conduct
student intake and on-going support, and keep records of students’
progress. She also assists with volunteer recruitment and support and
supports the organization as a whole, and learns a lot in the process!
She has just enrolled in her first Braille class. Likes: avocado,
snowflakes, chess, grass on bare feet, road trips and autumnal leaves.
