OUTREACH AND ADVOCACY

Sandwich Ministry

Remember the time of hunger in the time of plenty,
poverty and want in the day of wealth.
Sirach 18:25

In addition to the Winter Shelter program, St. James parishioners support St. Martin de Porres Shelter by making sandwiches, boiled eggs, and cookies for men age 50 and older. Volunteers sign-up to prepare food at home once per month for either the 2nd or the 4th Monday of the month. If the month has a 5th Monday, donations are needed then as well. Prepared food can be dropped off in the big refrigerator in the Cathedral Hall kitchen after the 8am, 10am, or noon Masses. Sandwiches can also be dropped off on the 2nd, 4th, and 5th Mondays of the month in the Parish Office between 9am and 3pm.

St. Martin de Porres is a Catholic Community Services homeless shelter for men 50 and over. St. Martin’s provides overnight shelter for 212 men and a meal for 275-300 men per day. They do not, however, have a large kitchen in which to prepare a meal, so they rely on outside groups to provide the food each night of the year. Ours is one of many groups that works in collaboration to provide meals for the men 365 days a year.  Click here to learn more about St. Martin de Porres Shelter.
