Each year during Holy Week, St. James Cathedral observes the office of Tenebrae (“shadows”) in which the sufferings of Christ are foretold in the Lamentations of Jeremiah and commemorated in the slow extinguishing of candles. The evening culminates in Gregorio Allegri’s stirring setting of Psalm 51, Miserere mei, Deus (“Have mercy on me, O God”). This sacred liturgy is free and open to all. The Very Reverend Michael G. Ryan, presider.
