9th-century image of St. PaulPrayer for the Year of St. Paul

Glorious Saint Paul,
Apostle to the Gentiles,
when the Lord called, you answered,
and you spread the good news of the Gospel
to the very ends of the earth.
Pray for us,
that we may serve Christ as you did:
proclaiming the name of Jesus
in good times and bad,
when convenient and when inconvenient.
Pray for us,
that we may welcome all the people we meet
with compassionate hearts and open minds.
Pray for us,
that Christ may live in us as he lived in you.
We pray in the name of the One
who is your Lord and ours,
Christ Jesus our Lord.  Amen.

A Litany in honor of St. Paul

We pray a litany in honor of St. Paul, and listen to him tell us his story.  We know that his story is also our own, for we too have been called out of darkness into God’s marvelous light--called to ministry in the body of Christ.

You heard of my former way of life, how I persecuted the church of God beyond measure and tried to destroy it… since I was a zealot for my ancestral traditions. Gal 1: 14

Saint Paul, pray for us.

Three times I was beaten with rods, once I was stoned, three times I was shipwrecked, I passed a night and day upon the deep; on frequent journeys, in dangers from rivers, dangers from robbers, dangers from my own race, dangers from Gentiles, dangers in the city, dangers in the wilderness, dangers at sea, dangers among false brothers; in toil and hardship, through many sleepless nights, through hunger and thirst, through frequent fastings, through cold and exposure.  2 Cor 11: 25-27

St. Paul on Prayer

  • The Spirit ... comes to the aid of our weakness; for we do not know how to pray as we ought, but he Spirit itself intercedes with inexpressible groanings.  And the one who searches hearts knows what is the intention of the Spirit, because it intercedes for the holy ones according to God's will.  (Romans 8:26-27)

  • With all prayer and supplication, pray at every opportunity in the Spirit.  To that end, be watchful with all perseverance and supplication for all the holy ones and also for me... (Ephesians 6:18-19)

  • Put on then, God's chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another, if one has a grievance against another, as the Lord has forgiven you, so must you also do.  And over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection.  And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you were also called in one body.  And be thankful.  Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, as in all wisdom you teach and admonish one another, singing psalms, hymns, and spiritual songs with gratitude in your hearts to God.  And whatever you do, in word or in deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.  (Colossians 3:12-17)

St. Paul prays for us

  • Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.  (Romans 1:7)

  • God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in proclaiming the gospel of his Son, that I remember you constantly, always asking in my prayers that somehow by God's will I may at last find my way clear to come to you.  For I long to see you, that I may share with you some spiritual gift, so that you may be strengthened, that is, that you and I may be mutually encouraged by one another's faith, yours and mine. (Romans 1:9-12)

  • I give thanks to my God always on your account for the grace of God bestowed on you in Christ Jesus, that in him you were enriched in every way, with all discourse and all knowledge, as the testimony to Christ was confirmed among you, so that you are not lacking in any spiritual gift as you wait for the revelation of our Lord Jesus Christ.  He will keep you firm to the end, irreproachable on the day of our Lord Jesus Christ.  God is faithful, and by him you were called to fellowship with his Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.  (I Corinthians 1:4-9)

  • What we pray for is your improvement.  (II Corinthians 13:9)

  • I kneel before the Father,
from whom every family in heaven and on earth is named,
that he may grant you in accord with the riches of his glory
to be strengthened with power through his Spirit in the inner self,
    and that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith;
that you, rooted and grounded in love,
may have strength to comprehend with all the holy ones
what is the breadth and length and height and depth,
and to know the love of Christ that surpasses knowledge,
so that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
Now to him who is able to accomplish
far more than all we ask or imagine,
by the power at work in us,
to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus
to all generations, forever and ever.  Amen. (Eph 3:14-21)

  • I give thanks to my God at every remembrance of you, praying always with you in my every prayer for all of you, because of your partnership for the Gospel from the first day until now.  I am confident of this, that the one who began a good work in you will continue to complete it until the day of Christ Jesus.  (Philippians 1:3-6)

  • And this is my prayer:  that your love may increase ever more and more in knowledge and every kind of perception, to discern what is of value, so that you may be pure and blameless for the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ for the glory and praise of God.  (Philippians 1:9-11)

  • My God will fully supply whatever you need,
in accord with his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.
To our God and Father, glory forever and ever.  Amen.  (Philippians 4:19-20)

  • We always give thanks to God, the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, when we pray for you, for we have heard of your faith in Christ Jesus and the love you have for all the holy ones because of the hope reserved for you in heaven.  (Colossians 1:3-5)

  • Remember my chains.  Grace be with you.  (Colossians 4:18)

  • ...we give thanks to God unceasingly, that, in receiving the word of God from hearing us, you received not a human word but as it truly is, the word of God, which is now at work in you who believe.  (I Thessalonians 2:13)

  • ...we always pray for you, that our God may make you worthy of his calling and powerfully bring to fulfillment every good purpose and every effort of faith, that the name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and you in him, in accord with the grace of our God and Lord Jesus Christ.  (II Thessalonians 1:11-12)
