Altar Servers at St. James

As altar servers, we have a very important job.  We lead the other ministers in the processions.  We carry candles to honor the signs of Jesus' presence among us:  the cross, the Gospel Book, the icon.  We prepare the altar for the celebration of the Eucharist and assist the priest.  And we join with the whole assembly in singing and praising God!

On Saturday, May 27, 2006, the servers gathered to practice, pray, and celebrate together.  Here are some pictures.

Cathedral servers make the processions look easy.  But practice makes perfect!  Here some of our newest servers learn how to do the Gospel procession.

The servers head around to the west vestibule to practice a great entrance procession.

After our practice, Father Ryan joined us for a special blessing.  We talked about the words that are inscribed over the altar:  "I am in your midst as one who serves."  Those words have special meaning for us servers.

Thank you, servers.  You do a GREAT job!!

After pizza and ice cream sundaes, one more group photo in the new Archbishop Murphy Courtyard--this time wearing our new Cathedral Server t-shirts!

Pictures from Server Day 2004!

In November of 2004, St. James Cathedral Parish turned 100!
Servers each received a Centennial T-shirt, then got their picture
taken on the steps of the Rectory.  Servers of today are maybe
a little more relaxed than the servers of long ago!  (See below!)

Altar Servers at St. James Cathedral, 1940s.  Today, girls, boys,
and even grownups serve together!  But our job hasn't changed at all:
we're still there to bring beauty and reverence to the liturgy.
