Tutoring at St. James ESL Program  

requirements & Commitments

 

Tutoring opportunities exist within each of our four service projects, to learn more about these projects visit our Services page.
 

ESL Tutor or Group Instructor
REFUGEE PROJECT

Provide recently arrived refugees with English language instruction and cross-cultural orientation in their homes and communities.

Tutor
GENERAL ESL PROJECT

Tutor one-to-one for our longest-running project. Meet with students in our on-site classrooms or at an off-site public locations such as a neighborhood library, café or bookshop. Students, tutor and staff work together to develop a learning plan.

Group Instructor
COMMUNITY MENTORS PROJECT

Help a group of five to fifteen students from one language group learn English and become more involved in the community. Create lessons around student field trips and community involvement projects.

Tutor or Interviewer
CITIZENSHIP PROJECT

Assist students preparing for the United States Citizenship exam by helping them to learn English while teaching them U.S. history and civics.

Tutors provide English language instruction based on the materials provided for exam preparation.

Interviewers assist students, tutor and staff in gauging level of preparation for the exam.

Tutors & Group Instructors must be...

  • 18 years of age or older

  • Fluent in English

  • Available to make a six-month commitment

 

responsibilities

Meet with your student or students twice a week for 1.5 hour lessons, maintain a record of volunteer hours and student attendance to be submitted monthly

 

Training 

All instructional volunteers attend a pre-service training in English language instruction techniques and lesson plan development provided by Tacoma Community House's Literacy NOW

 

resources and Support

Tutors are supported by our entire program and encouraged to take advantage of our on-site library, our online tutor resource page, and our Lesson Planner, an experienced ESL teacher. Additional resources include optional workshops on ESL and on other topics related to local and national immigrant and refugee concerns.
