Services FAQ

Who is Eligible?
Low-income refugees or immigrants living in King County who are at least 18 years of age.
Who are the tutors?
All St. James ESL Program tutors are volunteers trained through the Literacy NOW tutor training program.
Where is the tutoring?
St. James ESL offers accessible instruction throughout King County. Off-site locations include spaces provided by our Community Partners.
What time is tutoring?
Tutoring schedules are determined by student, tutor and staff.

Community Partners

ESL Tutoring

St. James ESL students actively participate in their English language learning through one-to-one tutoring or small group instruction.

ESL Students in Seattle Class

Staff works with tutors and students to develop an individualized plan of instruction, including goals, lesson plans and assessment.

Citizenship Tutoring
& Naturalization Assistance

St. James ESL Citizenship students receive comprehensive naturalization assistance through staff support and individual tutoring or group instruction.

Citizenship students learn English through U.S. civics and history in preparation for their United States Naturalization Exam. Staff provides information and referral to legal, health, and transportation services.

Program Support

Tutor In-Services
Volunteers are invited to attend workshops, consult with our ESL Specialist and use our Resource Library.
Student Support
Bilingual and bi-cultural staff provide students with mentoring, guidance and support, including referral to community resources.
Resource Library
The St. James ESL Resource Library is an on-site collection of books, periodicals, games, and video/audiotapes available to tutors and students. These materials can be used to supplement many ESL topics including grammar, pronunciation, vocabulary, cultural information, citizenship preparation, health, and refugee and immigrant issues.
