A Musical Puzzle from Dr. Savage

This piece of music was printed in 1903, the very year God led Bishop O’Dea
to build a great cathedral on First Hill in Seattle.
It is based on a piece of music that may be 700 years old!
It is in a chant style called a Sequence.

Can you young musical wizards figure out which piece
we are singing in Choir Camp is most like this ancient melody?

Do you remember the self-portraits we drew yesterday?
This is how they all came together!
This image of Mary, holding out her mantle to protect her people,
is called the Madonna of Mercy.  There are many different versions
of this idea.

It was fun trying to figure out who each portrait is supposed to be.

One of these kids is not like the others... can you pick him out?

Singing and practicing on the piano as the day begins.

Today's SENIOR CHORISTERS!
Way to go!

Brave Psalmists at Morning Praise.

Today at Morning Praise John Marquez, the Cathedral sacristan,
spoke to us about the sun, the moon, and the stars.
This photograph was taken by the Hubble Telescope.
What does a star really look like?

Mr. Roman Beryozdin came to talk to us about different chant traditions.

Mr. Bergozdin shows us how to make BIG vowels!

Practicing in the Cathedral before Mass.

At Mass today, Father Bryan Ochs, a brand-new priest who was just ordained
in June, led us in prayer.  Father Ochs reminded us that we ALL have an important
job at Mass--even if sometimes we might feel like we're only
"a bump on a log," God really wants us to be there!

Mass is our most important prayer.  When we sing at Mass,
we help others to pray, and we give glory to God!

It's good to take a moment of quiet to reflect and write about
what we've learned and seen during these busy days of Choir Camp.
You can read some of our thoughts below.

Experienced keyboard students get a chance to practice on the big organ.

You get to come up with a caption for this one!  :)
Special thanks to Mrs. Adler for the wonderful photos today!
Tell me anything you have learned about Mary,
or how you might feel about her

  • She knows Jesus better than anyone else.
  • I have never known that Mary was as special as I had thought of her before and she is a phenomenal person.
  • I feel that she prays and she loves me.
  • I feel protected knowing she never leaves us.
  • I love Mary because she is beautiful and a wonderful role model.
  • I do feel very happy or special when I think about her.
  • I feel like Mary is really kind to us.  She is brave and bold.  She held it together even when her son Jesus was hanging on the cross.  It takes a lot of strength and compassion to be able to do that.
  • I feel that Mary strengthens us every day through prayer, music, and everyday life.
  • I feel that this past week Mary has been watching us, and I feel that she is being sweet and determined and courageous… and she’s passing it on to us for safekeeping and use.
  • I learned that Mary is higher, in “rank,” than the saints.
  • I feel good about Mary.
  • I learned that Mary is like the stars, just like God is like the sun.
  • I feel that Mary is my patron because I am named after her.  I learned that her body and soul were sent up to heaven and that she is called Star of the Sea.
  • I feel happy and I learned that Mary was a wonderful mother and that she did not write a Bible and that she knew her son better than anyone.
  • Mary’s powers are from God.
  • She took honor not as something that leads to high class and pride, but as a job.
  • I love Mary so much and it brings me great comfort to know that I can tell Her anything and I know Mary will always be there to listen or help me.
  • I feel Mary is great and she is a great saint for being Jesus’ mother.
  • I learned that Mary is like the moon:  she will never turn her back on us.
  • I learned that she is the Mother of all people and that you can pray to her along with God and Jesus.
  • I feel happy about Mary because she reminds me of my own mom.
  • I feel that Mary is helpful to everyone and even though she doesn’t write any Bibles she is still helpful.
  • I feel like she is the stars in the sky, and like them she watches over us each and every day of our lives.  She is a really important person to everyone.
  • I have learned some qualities of Mary that you don’t know just when you look at her.  She is modest, giving, considerate, thankful, and she absolutely does NOT take advantage of people.  She is simply beautiful.
  • Mary makes me feel joyful, hopeful, and happy.
  • I feel that Mary was a person who had a strong belief in God.
  • I feel that she did something very good and important.
  • I learned that people call her Star of the Ocean.  And I feel that she is an inspiration for us all.
  • I learned that Mary went to heaven body and soul!
  • Mary is like a mother to me.  Someone that I can tell all my problems and I know she’s listening.
  • Mary has a job, her one job is to bring us closer and closer to Jesus, to lead us on the road to heaven.
  • I think that she is like the stars and moon.  Because the moon is pretty just like Mary.
  • I like Mary and what I learned about her is that she went up to heaven with her soul AND body.
  • I learned that Mary is like a star because she will always be around us with all of the saints and angels or like the moon because she never turns her back on us.
  • I learned that Mary is Queen of the stars.

How does singing help you pray?
  • I think that singing encourages my faith in God.
  • Singing helps me pray because the songs are like prayers to me and so if I sing I’m praying at the same time.
  • Well, first of all, singing is praying twice.  So actually you are singing.  And singing helps you meditate more on prayer afterwards.
  • When I sing, I think about the words I’m singing, and try to make them as beautiful as I possibly can, to please God and to tell him I love him.
  • You can use the words in prayers.
  • Singing is a type of prayer when you sing you put your whole heart in.
  • When I sing I sing my heart out!!!
  • Singing helps me pray because it seems as if the words are a prayer.
  • Singing helps me pray because it allows me to concentrate more, and helps me focus my mind.
  • Singing helps me pray because I am more engaged in a prayer and I can pour all my emotion into my words while singing a song.  Also, while I’m singing, the words are already there in front of me, so then I can focus on the meaning.
  • Well the words are like praying and when I sing it’s like an angel is praying.
  • Singing helps me pray because of the wonderful sound of everybody singing.
  • It helps me communicate with him through my lips and also the song.
  • Singing helps me know that God gave me the talent for singing.
  • Singing makes me feel really calm and centered.  A lot of songs inspire me to be those ways, I like to be that way when I pray: calm, peaceful, relaxed, centered, etc.
  • Singing makes me concentrate and think about God.  It makes me very happy which also helps me think of the love of God.
  • The way of speaking brings out the meaning, origins, and importance of prayer.
  • Singing helps me pray because when I sing and pray with meaning to God and from the heart it feels reverent and a calm feeling.  Singing also helps because it’s usually to God, which helps you sing what you feel.
  • Singing helps me pray by singing God’s word.
  • Singing helps me pray because it clears my mind.
  • It makes me feel calm.
  • Singing is praising the Lord.
  • It makes it easier to say stuff to God.
  • Singing helps me pray because it lets me get out what I want to say in a way that even the strangers listen.
  • Singing helps me pray by strengthening my vocals and knowing that I’m praising God through music.
  • For me singing sets me in the state of relaxed prayerful mind.
  • It helps me get in the mood to pray and praise God.
  • I use singing as a way to help others pray.  It also helps me to think about God.
  • It helps me feel more confident.
  • Singing helps me pray because I love singing and I love that you can pray and sing.
  • Singing is a way of praying and expressing myself and my feelings at the same time.  I think it’s so much better than just chanting in bland words too and also sounds dynamic and uplifting.

One thing I have learned about myself during camp is…
  • That if you are set to do something you can do it if you pray that you can.  God will provide it if he wants you to do it.

  • So far, I seem to be a pretty positive person people look up to a lot.
  • I learned that you can be open to everyone.  And that no one will laugh at you.  And I learned that everyone loves me the way I am.
  • I LOVE SOLOS!!!!!
  • I can be confident when singing in front of people.
  • I love singing very very very very very very very very very very very very very very very much.
  • I can really take risks with my singing and be OK with that.
  • I knew I could play At the River on my first try.
  • I learned new songs and instruments.
  • That I am ready to sing a solo, and most importantly, in front of my friends, my teachers, and anybody who will listen… even if I don’t get asked for a while.  Hehe!
  • That even when you mess up on a solo your fellow choristers won’t laugh at you.
  • I am enjoying it more than I did four years ago.
  • I am very talented
  • I love to sing more of classical pieces
  • I’ve learned that I always try to sing the best I can and always work hard at new pieces
  • All of us are important to the Church and no one is better than the other.  We make the Church become what it is now.
  • I can do something not with as much scholarship and understanding as clarity and focus.
  • I am sweet and helpful.
  • That I really REALLY do LOVE to sing and that I am shy but I have gotten more open and I feel very happy and comfortable being around everyone here at choir.
  • That I really like to stand out and be recognized and noticed, but not a ton.
  • That if I try and keep practicing I can improve my singing.
  • I don’t like satsumas and there is an instrument called a “bell tree”
  • To never give up on yourself even in the downest times
  • That I was really nervous before camp, but when I saw some people I knew and at the end of the day I though the first day of camp was really fun, so I didn’t need to be nervous anymore.
  • I am a caring and helpful student and learned that I was also talented
  • That taking musical risks, like solos, help me feel more confident in my voice when I sing
  • I incredibly enjoy jumproping!
  • That I don’t have to be someone else to “fit in” here.  It’s a place I can be myself and goof off a bit, not just pretending to be another person.
  • I can read Latin
  • That I like beach balls.
  • I am a better singing than I was.
  • True music comes from within yourself.
  • That I’m not the only one who loves to sing and praise the Lord.  I look around, and I see so many faces wanting to bring greater glory to God.
  • I have learned how to sing better and make new friends.
  • Once I met someone I start talking to them a LOT!
  • I don’t like waking up at 7:30 at all!
  • I am thoughtful.
  • That I will always love to sing.
