What does a star look like? Humans have always pondered the
night sky, and tried to understand the stars and the movement of the
planets. They found patterns in the stars, and named them after
men and women, gods and goddesses, animals, and mythical creatures.
When they painted the night sky, they didn’t make it black… or even
blue! This map of the sky from the 17th century is full of color:

The famous artist Albrecht Durer created this woodcut of the night sky
showing all the signs of the zodiac. In the corners, there are
people studying celestial globes.

The artist Vincent Van Gogh painted several images of the starry sky.
What adjectives would you use to describe this painting of the sky
called, Starry Night?

How about this one? What’s different in this painting by Van Gogh?

Here are some photographs of stars taken by the Hubble Space Telescope.
