Message from Ms Sunde
I just knew it. This truly is the most amazing Schola Cantorum Choir Camp
I have ever had the privilege of directing! You sing musically,
prayerfully, and -- plain and simply -- amazingly well. The performance
today at Skyline was truly spectacular, and many people couldn't believe that
we'd only been rehearsing for a day and a half.
But, we still have lots of work to do!
Get some good sleep, and I'll look forward to another great day filled with fun,
friends, and fantastic music-making. Ta da! -- Ms Sunde

Today began with a special awards ceremony. Campers got awards for setting
a great example, for being focused and ready to try new things, for learning to
use their voice without being shy, and lots of other great things.

At Morning Praise today, two campers lead the whole group in the Psalm.

Mrs. Bowen led us in prayer today. She taught us a prayer that's handy to
say to our Guardian Angel any time, day or night!
Angel of God, my Guardian dear,
to whom God's love commits me here,
Ever this day be at my side
to light and guard, to rule and guide. Amen.

Dr. Conlon helped us warm up and learn new techniques.

Here, we learn to use our whole body to sing. We step forward when we sing
louder, and fall back when we get quieter.

Later in the morning, we visited Skyline at First Hill where we presented a
short concert for the residents. Here, Rose Southall, who is a Cathedral
parishioner and resident at Skyline at First Hill, introduces us to the other
residents.

That's what you call 'Standing Room Only'!

After the concert, we got to meet some of our neighbors!

We had lunch on the beautiful terrace at Skyline. It was a lovely day for
lunch outside!

After lunch, Mrs. Cotton taught us a Serbian village line dance called Savila Se
Bela Loza, which means "A pretty grape vine entwined itself." People dance
it at weddings, baptisms, and other community celebrations. In the old
days, when there was no radio or TV, you can imagine that people figured out fun
ways to make their own
music!

In the afternoon, between music sectionals, we worked on creating some beautiful
angel wings. What color "palette" did you choose?

Happy feet! Who do these cool feet belong to?

The day wraps up with Ms. Settle and music theory.
See you tomorrow, campers!

One thing I learned today was...
|
- We have to do a concert
- To walk the rhythm
- To sing with perfect vowels instead of singing the
way you talk
- To sing 'ah' instead of 'uh'
- That Ms. Sunde told me to open my mouth bigger to
sing better
- East/West stretch
- A new part of a song
- That you have got to pay attention to papers that
have your schedule on them

- How to sing 'Ave Maria'
- How to keep my vowels tall and not so lazy like.
- That once you relieve yourself of being scared of
what people think of your singing you'll sound even better
- That you wear special shoes when you play the organ
because the dirt from your street shoes will muck up the pedals. They
are pointy because it helps you play the pedals
- More on how to use my breath effectively and
efficiently
- How to use my breath while singing
- moving your body forwards and back makes your voice
while you sing louder or quieter
- The third verse of 'Thou That Art So Fair and
Bright'
- The lowest note the organ can hit
- That even if you can't understand the Latin you can
usually guess what it means
- How to control my voice
- How to stay in unison
- How to draw shadows for feathers and how to fall
asleep when I tell myself to
- What things on the organ are called
- Kyrie from Mass of Angels
- How an organ works
- To sing while walking backwards
|
What surprised me most today was...
|
- The awards

- That we are doing a
concert
- That you could play two
organs at once
- That finally we came
into camp
- How good Gabe sang
- Gabe is a really good
singer
- That we had a concert!!!
- How much my voice
improved
- When you say an 'I'
vowel, your jaw is tall
- When I got an award for
letting my worries go and singing more like me
- When Ms. Sunde showed us
the camp store
- That we were able to
actually get through Psalm 150 right
- When Ms. Settle played
the piano. She plays good
- Getting to play the
organ
- How much I can do in 3
hours. I can learn a lot of words and get better and learn about the
organ
- We didn't get much time
on the organ
- When we went and sang.
We weren't really ready but I felt that we did a good job
- How much we got done in
only two days, and how much my singing improved
- Nothing surprised me
today
- Singing and having lunch
across the street
- How good the boys' group
sounded. And how a boy that goes to my school randomly walked into the
room
- How yummy the juice was
during snack
- How strong the air
coming from the organ pipes was, and that we were allowed to put our heads
into it
- How people were as
friendly to me as if we had known each other for 6 years
- The little concert we
had
- Going up to the organ
- My picture was on the
website :)
- Ave Verum Corpus

How does singing help me pray?
|
- Singing helps me pray
when I am singing to God.

- It helps you pray by
putting in a sort of poetry that makes you realize you can put that in your
prayers by thanking people, for extremely beautiful and meaningful reasons.
- The words we sing are
prayers to God.
- Thinking of angels
- It says something
meaningful in a musical way
- It helps me think about
God
- Because it is like
singing praises to God so it is kinda like praying
- When I sing, it helps me
focus on God
- When we pray we could
sing for our Lord and enjoy when we sing
- When you use the gifts
God gave you in a holy place like church you get closer to God and helps you
pray
- Some prayers were meant
to be sung in the church
- While you sing you are
also singing to God and the audience
- It helps me concentrate
on God and focus more
- It helps so I am more
focused on a prayer while I either am saying or singing it

- It makes me remember
about God if you also put it in a poetry form
- Singing gives prayer a
tune to make it interesting
- It helps me pray because
if I transfer the song into words it is basically a prayer
- It helps me pray because
when you sing in church, it basically is praying, only set to music
- We use our gifts, and
the lyrics we sing are so full of meaning
- It helps me sing God's
praise
- The words are
inspiration
- Because when you sing,
you ARE praying
- The words in the songs
we sing should give us inspiration for what we pray for
- It helps me pray by
mixing one of my favorite activities (singing) with prayerful words
- It helps me understand
the prayer better when it is a song
- When I sing, I can make
God's praises beautiful and clear, and I can connect to them better because
I feel each note deep within me.
