CHOIR CAMP 2012

A HUGE THANK YOU
to Mrs. Adler and Miss Christina Smith for taking pictures today!

Another year of Choir Camp begins with...  drum roll... SINGING!

Ms. Sunde leads the way to the Chapel for morning praise.

Father Ryan talked to us about the "cloud of witnesses," the saints who surround us, and cheer for us as we "go for the gold" in our faith lives!  Who are your heroes of faith?  Who inspires you?  Father Ryan (a hero to many!!! ;) ) talked today about our patron, James, who went for the gold. Click here to read more about James!

The young women of Jubilate! are doing something to get us ready for the Play of Daniel.  Whatever it is, it involves a lot of gold ribbon!  Thanks to these young women for being great role models and for volunteering to help out during Choir Camp.

The "Cathedral Bombarde" is a group of young men who will be accompanying us at morning praise and other events throughout the week.  Way to go, Bombardes!

Ms. Sunde talked about the "clusters of grapes."  Can you spot them?

In the afternoon, we broke into small groups to start practicing our parts for the Play of Daniel.  Here's one group...

...and another...

...and another...

... and another!  It will be great to see all these pieces come together on Friday!

The full-staged Play of Daniel is Friday at 1:00pm. BE THERE!

A Choir Camp tradition is to take a few moments to reflect, write, and draw in the afternoon.  We write thank you notes to all those people who make this week possible.  This camper decided to get comfortable (?!).  Read our reflections below!

Choir Camp isn't ALL about music--there are lots of fun breaks to eat lunch or have a snack, and just have fun together!

How many new campers did you meet this year?  How many old friends did you catch up with?

My favorite saints... or a saint I hope to learn about this week!

  • I would like to learn more about the saints
  • I want to learn more about St. James
  • I like St. Francis because he is my patron saint
  • I like St. Rose of Lima because she always worked to help others
  • St. Michael really inspires me to just honestly make people have a smile on their faces and to strive for the best
  • I believe in the saint that exists inside everyone.  This saint is a person they can choose to be: generous, compassionate, forgiving.  Today, I have already seen that saint in this room, welcoming classmates, helping with music. Each day, we encounter saints if we are lucky enough to notice their miracles.
  • Hildegard von Bingen was very musical
  • I am named after St. Eric, and on my name card it says "The Royal" and I'm guessing that was because he was a king. I am happy he is a saint in heaven with God.
  • I don't know a lot about saints, but I would like to learn more about them.
  • A saint I'm very interested in is St. George. What is also wonderful about saints is they always have an amazing story about them and what makes them so special to us.
  • I want to be like Mary.
  • St. Martin de Porres was awesome. Dominic in the monastery!
  • St. Patrick was the patron saint of Ireland, but he was not born there.
  • I want to learn about St. Frances Cabrini
  • St. Joseph, how he was humble and pure. Never lying. Always telling the truth.
  • I thought Father's reading was wonderful and made me feel happy, I don't know why--excited and joyful in my heart. I don't know exactly how to explain it.
  • St. Therese of Lisieux is special to me because when I have a feeling inside of me and I need someone to talk to, I can talk to her.
  • I don't know about saints but I can learn, but I do know what they are.
  • I like St. Bernadette for her perseverance.
  • To be honest, i have been trying to think of a saint that I think really stands out to me, but a little more research would be fine for me. I still always say to myself to go and research some saints, but that will also come a little later. I am still trying analyze Father Ryan's reading deconstruction.
  • St. Paul exhorted Timothy to be strong in the faith, to teach others, and to be bold in Christ Jesus. We should all strive to live our lives more fully in enjoyment and praise of God, learning and fulfilling His principles.
  • St. Max is really cool! I think Maximilien Kolbe is an inspiration. He received death without protest and with open hands. I think he is a great example for receiving what God throws at you in your life, knowing that he knows better than you.
  • St. Paul. I want to learn how/what he did.
  • I want to learn about Kateri Tekakwitha.
  • Clare of Assisi--my middle name is named after her.
  • Saint Margaret of Scotland was a queen as well as a saint and gave most of her money to the poor.
  • I felt hopeful after Father Ryan did his homily for us because he let me know there are people watching over me and helping me through my journey through life.
  • I want to learn more about Mary, the mother of Jesus Christ.
  • I would like to learn more about St. Catherine and more about what she did throughout her life. I understand she was humble, pure, and told the truth.
  • I want to learn about Daniel a little more since we are doing a play about him!
  • St. JoseMaria Escriva is the founder of Opus Dei. He answered God's call in a hard time.
  • St. Alexandra is my patron saint. I feel we have so much in common.  We both have such a strong passion for Christ and we would do anything for him. Christ is our way, our life, and our hope. Saint Alexandra died for Christ with full, everlasting love. My hope is that I can be an image of Christ, just like her. I hope I can love everyone just like Christ. I pray I will find his will, just like Alexandra. :)
  • There are so many saints, and I love them all. Saint Anthony from Padua is a patron of many things. One thing is helping find something lost. I know that whenever I am worried or lost I can pray to him and he'll help me find my way, or whatever it is I have lost. Of course I try very hard to follow the example of my patron saint, St. Margaret, also known as Sw. Matgorzata in Polish. I look to her every day, and I know she will never fail me.
  • I would love to learn more about the saints, but I really love St. Martin de Porres, St. Therese, and Joan of Arc, especially, because they are all very strong saints.
  • St. Augustine, his life and how he changed, also St. Francis of Assisi, St. Cabrini, and St. George. St. Francis of Assisi loved animals; St. George was a military saint and martyr.
  • St. Cecilia is my favorite saint because she was very brave, loved to sing, and worshiped our Lord Jesus Christ.  She is my role model.
  • St. Catherine of Siena: she became a Dominican Nun; she was very pretty, but she didn't want to marry, so she cut off her hair. She is a doctor of the Church. She told the Pope to go back to Rome where he belonged (he was staying in Avignon). She is my patron saint. She gives me a present on her feast day every year. (It's NOT Mom and Dad.)
  • As cheesy as it may sound to you, Mary is a role model for me.  Before she was accepted into heaven, she must have thought sometimes that she would not be recognized so profoundly (although she was probably too unselfish to think that). She was happy with just bearing the perfect person, not being one.
  • Saint Rose of Lima is my patron saint.
  • I think saints are a great example to us and can help us in our daily life. I think that we should look up to saints and take in their great example. Saints are truly our heroes of God!

THANK YOU, Father Ryan!

  • Thank you so much for being our parish priest for so long. You have done many wonderful things for the church to make it a better place.  I think the church is special, but you're part of what makes it special!
  • First off, thank you for all of the great things you do as a priest of St. James. Being able to learn so much about the Church and conduct of my life has been such a help. I love the idea of Choir Camp and all of the youth ministries here at St. James. It has been a true privilege to serve, read, and sing alongside you. I would love to be able to come here every year of my life to be able to listen to the legacy left by members of the Church. What a pleasure it is. I don't have very much time to write a longer letter, but an informal thank you!
  • Thank you so much for motivating us in a way to make us think outside the box. By comparing one's life journey to the Olympics, you make us find our own connections that relate to our lives, and to our faith. You communicate to us in a positive, equal way, and a way that everybody can understand. Thank you for your support, and keep it up!
  • Thank you so much for all that you do for St. James Cathedral! From kindly greeting everyone at church, to letting all of the choirs sing to serve God. Everything you do is greatly appreciated.
  • Thank you, Father Ryan, for going out of your way to accompany us.
  • I'd like to thank Father Ryan because he always supports the choir and he is heartwarming and welcoming to all.
  • Thank you, Father Ryan, for all your time that you put into Choir Camp.  It’s fun!!!

  • That you Father for taking your time to be at our prayer.  I really loved it.  Hope to see you soon!
  • Thank you SO much for helping with snack, camp, and morning prayers!  J  Your work is much appreciated by ALL of us.  Not only me.
  • Thank you Father Ryan for talking at Morning Praise and helping with snack.  You are so helpful and everyone appreciates and thanks you for what you do at the church.
Thank you for all your hard work.  You have made choir camp a  wonderful place to be.  I like your homily.
  • Thank you, Father Ryan, for helping to make this camp possible!  I love camp!  Thank you for leading us in morning praise, also.  Know this, too:  I LOVE music!  Camp means SO much to me!  Everyone is always so kind!  And it’s so wonderful to have you bless us every morning.  It gives out voices the strength we need to get through the week.  I’m so grateful that this camp is here, and that I can take part in it.  So, Thank you, Father Ryan.
  • Dear Father Ryan, thank you for all you’ve done for the St. Gregory, St. Cecilia, and Schola Choirs!  Cheerio.  Father Ryan rocks!!!
  • Thank you for your support of Choir Camp.  I am delighted to be King Darius, and my sectionals are great, just like the whole camp.  I am thankful that St. James Cathedral puts on this camp where we can learn to sing better, make friends, and actually participate in the Mystery Play of Daniel, Mass, and another performance for Archbishop Sartain.
  • Thank you for anything and everything you do.  You are a wonderful priest for the Cathedral.  I hope you keep inspiring people to follow God and His will for us all.  Thank you for being an image of Christ.  Thank you for helping us come closer to God.  You are a great role-model.
  • I think that you are the best father Seattle can ask for.
  • Thank you for everything you do for our Church.  Thank you for being such an amazing priest since I was a baby and even before.  Thank you for being there to help the people at snack today.  Also for always saying how beautiful our choir is.  Stay strong and follow in the path of Christ.
  • Thank you for saying our morning prayer and complimenting us on our singing voices.  Also thank you so much for visiting us throughout the day.  Especially when you came and visited us at snack.
  • Thank you for supporting the camp and the choir.  I feel very lucky to be part of this!
I once heard a story about a teacher who noticed a lonely student in the hallway and greeted him every day.  Later the student told him, “Thank you, Mr. Tice, for saying ‘hi’ to me in the hallway.”  It was a simple act of kindness that made a big difference for the student.  All day, all the time, you give energy to other acts of kindness that make a big difference.  Having Morning Praise with us on our first day, complimenting our singing, going out in sweltering heat to serve us snack.  Taking the time to ask us how we are doing individually.  These deeds always make us feel welcome.  Your everyday acts of kindness and good will always make a difference.  Thank you.
  • Thanks a lot for everything you have provided for the Schola Cantorum.
  • Thank you Father Ryan for all that you have done.  You are truly such an amazing example to all that have been blessed to meet you.  Taking the example of Jesus, the good shepherd you watch over your flock with great care, patience, and compassion.  You help bring us closer to God, and bring many new people to the Church.  There is so much more I’d love to thank you for, but I hope you know how very much you mean to me, and to everyone around you.  Thank you once again!

THANK YOU to the Bombarde!

** Thank you so much for accompanying us @ morning praise!

** Thank you for showing us your spectacular piano skills.  I also play piano and I wish I could play as well as you.

** Thank you for helping us out with the piano.  I really think you are really awesome with the piano.

** Thank you for helping us in the morning.  It was fun.

** Thank you for playing all that music for us this morning.  I appreciate the effort that you put into your learning.  I like how you played that music.

** Thank you so much for the lovely organ playing you did for us.  Also for helping us out.

** Nice work on the organ and singing.

**Thank you, Bombardes!  Ms Sunde think you “guise” (ha ha) are awesome and so do we.  Your organ playing was awesome at morning prayer.  Your playing makes us (and me) proud.  Your intelligence makes us (and me) want to sing for God.
