The Spirit of Prophecy: An Art Exhibit

ABOUT THE SHOW
In connection with the concert “Prophets,” featuring the music of Carissimi and Charpentier performed by Pacific MusicWorks, directed by Stephen Stubbs, St. James Cathedral will be presenting “The Spirit of Prophecy,” a show featuring works by five contemporary artists. Each of the artists featured is known for addressing spiritual themes in works which range from large-scale oils to intimate woodcuts and mixed media sculpture.  The show will open on Friday, January 13, and will hang in the Cathedral Chapel through February 19.
 

ABOUT THE ARTISTS
Alfonse Borysewicz was born in Detroit in 1957.  He engaged in Seminary Studies and received a master's degree in theology before studying painting at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston.  Borysewicz has received two Pollock-Krasner Foundation Fellowships (1987, 1992) and a Guggenheim Painting Fellowship (1995).  His last solo show with Francine Seders Gallery was in November of 2002, but his work has been included in numerous gallery group shows, among them Big and Small (2007) and Happy Birthday, Francine (2009/10).  His work has been featured in solo exhibitions at St. Francis College in Brooklyn (2008), The Church of St. Paul the Apostle in New York (2008), and The Oratory Church of St. Boniface in Brooklyn (2009). 

He has exhibited widely throughout the US, Europe and Japan.  He teaches philosophy and theology in the NY/NJ area.

Laura Lasworth received her BFA from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago and MFA from California Institute of the Arts in Valencia, California. Her paintings have been exhibited in numerous solo and group shows across the country and have been featured in such publications as Art in America, Artforum, LA Times, and IMAGE Journal. She is represented by Lora Schlesinger Gallery in Santa Monica, CA. and is currently a Professor of Art at Seattle Pacific University. Professor Lasworth’s most recent collection, “The Western Wall,” was named Los Angeles Times ‘Critic’s Choice’, calling the paintings “ravishingly beautiful.”

Christen Mattix was born in 1977 and grew up in Thailand.  She received an MFA from the San Francisco Art Institute in 2005.  She received an artist residency at the James Washington Foundation in Seattle, WA 2010. Her work was included in the show “Collective Singular” in Denver, CO in conjunction with the Biennial for the Americas. She has shown work at SAM Gallery and Shift Collaborative Studio in Seattle, as well as nationally and abroad.  She currently teaches at Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA.

Barry Moser was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee in 1940. He was educated at a military academy there, The Baylor School, then at Auburn University and the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga. He did graduate work at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst in 1970. He studied with George Cress, Leonard Baskin, Fred Becker, and Jack Coughlin. His work is represented in numerous collections, museums, and libraries in the United States and abroad, including The National Gallery of Art, Washington, The Metropolitan Museum, The British Museum, The Library of Congress, The National Library of Australia, The London College of Printing, The Pierpont  Morgan Library, The Vatican Library, Harvard University, Yale University, Dartmouth College, Cambridge University, the Israel Museum and Princeton University to name a few. Mr. Moser has exhibited internationally in both one-man and group exhibits. He is a member of the Society of Printers, Boston; an Associate of the National Academy of Design elected in 1982 & made full Academician in 1994; and was a founding trustee of the Eric Carle Museum of Picture Book Art. He was awarded the Doctor of Fine Arts degree by Westfield State College, Westfield, Massachusetts (1999), the Doctor of Humanities degree by Anna Maria College, Paxton, Massachusetts (2001), and the Doctor of Fine Arts degree from Massachusetts College of Art, Boston, Massachusetts (2003).

Natalie Niblack studied at the University of Montana and the School of Visual Concepts in Seattle.  She received an MFA from Edinburg College of Art, Scotland in 1993.  She has shown extensively in Scotland, Washington and other states.  She now lives and works near Bellingham, Washington.
