 Each year, the
Cathedral is privileged to host the Archdiocesan celebration of Our Lady of
Guadalupe, Madre de las Americas.
 The roses at the
altar recall the story of the appearance of the Virgin to St. Juan Diego, when
she filled his tilma with blooming roses in the middle of winter.
 In the procession
from St. Mary's Catholic Church, a young woman plays the part of Mary in a
living tableau of the apparitions.

 The bishop doubted
Juan Diego at first, but when he saw the roses and the miraculous image on the
tilma, he believed and built the church Mary wanted on the hill of Tepeyac.
 Groups of
dancers from all over the Archdiocese participate in the procession.
 Each group of
danzantes wears a distinctive costume, which speaks both of pride in their
culture and love for the Virgin of Guadalupe.

 Mariachi musicians
play the traditional morning song to the Blessed Virgin Mary, Las Mañanitas.
 During the
entrance procession of the Mass, everyone crowds forward to catch a glimpse of
our new Archbishop, J. Peter Sartain. This was his first major liturgy in
the Cathedral since his Installation.
 Archbishop Sartain
presided and preached in Spanish.
 Auxiliary Bishop
Eusebio Elizondo joined Archbishop Sartain for the Rite of Sprinkling.

¡Viva la Virgen de Guadalupe!
