Words of the Campers

One word to describe camp today:
Exciting • Whatever • Fabulous • Tiring • Dazzling • Valuable • New • Amazing • Happy • Very very fun • Quiet • Surprising • Fun • Cool and fun and exciting • Thrilling • Fascinating • Happy • Informative

Facts I learned today
 • I learned that the giant puppet of St. James is stored in one of the towers.
 • I learned that there are bones of saints under the altar.
 • I learned that Mother Cabrini sat in the pews at St. James.
 • Sometimes in paintings saints are holding things that show how they died.
 • I didn't learn anything.
 • I learned I suck at keeping the tempo in music.
 • I learned that they didn't rebuild the dome because it was too expensive.
 • The painting in the cathedral is very old, I think 600 years.
 • There was supposed to be a window of St. Bridget in the church, but it got replaced with St. James.
 • There are four windows showing the evangelists, who wrote the Gospels, Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John.
 • I learned the little prayer, "Little flower, show you power."
 • I learned how the cathedral keeps cool.

Thanks to Mrs. Manuel, who helped us with P.E. every day!
 • Thank you for the fun and exciting activities you did for us.
 • Thank you so, so, so, so much for providing us with the Italian sodas!  They were delicious!  Also, thank you for playing games with us.

 • You are very considerate.
 • I appreciate the time and effort that you put into making us have a great time.

 • The concentration game was my favorite.  Thanks so much.
 • Thank you for all the fun and exciting games.  They were a blast!
 • Mrs. Manuel, I had fun in your games, but next time, in jump rope, could it be 50 jumps instead of 200?

Thanks to Ms. Laughlin, who took us on a tour of the saints of the Cathedral
 • Thank you for all that you taught us about saints.
 • Thank you so much.  We had so much fun while we were with you.
 • Thank you for showing us all the saints in the cathedral, and also for telling us about them, too.  I thought that it was really cool how they all had their own story.  Also, I think I could have paid more attention when you were talking.
 • Thanks for giving a tour.  I like learning about the saints.  I wasn't listening that well, but it was really cool.
 • Thank you for telling us about the saints/Saints in the cathedral.  I learned a lot.
 • Thank you so much for helping us understand more about Cathedral history when today you showed us important people, symbols, and things that lie within the church.
 • It was wonderful learning about the altar and the saints.
 • Thank you so much for giving us a tour of the cathedral!  I thought it was amazing how old the church was.
 • Thank you for taking us through the Cathedral.  You were very patient and informative.  I love to hear the little stories behind the things we see each week.  I think it helps me to not take them for granted.

Pictures of the Day

Our morning began with a surprise visit from Chris Gross.  Mr. Gross is an expert piano tuner.  Unlike most instruments, pianos and organs are too complex for performers to be able to tune them themselves.  Mr. Gross has tuned instruments for clients like Elton John, Eric Clapton, and, of course, St. James Cathedral!

Rosanne Michaels, who directs the Welcome Back Program at St. James Cathedral, led us in prayer at Morning Praise.

Mrs. Michaels told us a story about visiting a chapel at night.  The only light she could see was the sanctuary light, which burns in every Catholic church, reminding us that Jesus is truly present in God's house.  "How lovely is your dwelling place, Lord, mighty God!"

We got to climb into the Hutchings-Votey organ in the west gallery.  It's so big that you can walk around inside it!  A new rank of pipes is being installed right now.  It's called a 32-foot-reed, and will be the deepest, loudest notes on the organ.

Mr. Kraus played a short recital on the 1742 Domenico Traeri pipe organ.  He played pieces by many composers, including Claudio Merulo, Girolamo Frescobaldi, Andrea Gabrieli, and many others.  These are the stops on the pipe organ:  8' Principal; 4' Ottava; 2' Quintadecima; 1 1/3' Decimanona; 1' Vigesimaseconda; 8' Voce Umana.

Ms. Manuel leads us in exercises every afternoon.  Today, some people got to 400 jumps on their jump ropes!
