Pictures of the day
These pictures may take a few moments to download, so be PATIENT!

We begin our day with prayer in the Chapel.  Music helps us lift our hearts to God.  As St. Augustine said, "Whoever sings, prays TWICE."

Father Ryan led us in prayer.  He told us a story about Sir Christopher Wren, who built the great Cathedral of St. Paul in London.  We all agreed that St. James is another great Cathedral.  We help to "build" it with our active participation in the liturgy.

Father Ryan also told us about one of the Cathedral's biggest mysteries.  Almost exactly one hundred years ago, Bishop O'Dea laid the cornerstone for St. James Cathedral.  Now, no one knows where it is.  Do you think you'll be the one to find it?

Ms. Patella helped us to focus on words.  We each got a line from a poem called "Jabberwocky."  Some lines sounded pretty funny!

You would never believe it, but we're working in this picture!  We walked around and around, repeating our line to ourselves.  By the end of our session, we still didn't know what every word meant, but we did have a pretty good idea of what "Jabberwocky" was about.

There's more to ringing bells than you might think!  How you hold it is really important.  Also, you can touch the handle, but never the metal part of the bell.

We learned how to play a "blues progression" on Orff instruments.  Do you remember the patterns?

Most of our time today we spent in the choir room, learning new songs, singing together, making music!

JABBERWOCKY
by Lewis Carroll

`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
    Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
    And the mome raths outgrabe.

'Beware the Jabberwock, my son!
The jaws that bite, the claws that catch!
Beware the Jujub bird, and shun
    The frumious Bandersnatch!'

He took his vorpal sword in hand:
Long time the manxome foe he sought --
So rested he by the Tumtum tree,
    And stood awhile in thought.

And as in uffish thought he stood,
The Jabberwock, with eyes of flame,
Came whiffling through the tulgey wood,
    And burbled as it came!

One, two! One, two! And through and through
    The vorpal blade went snicker-snack!
He left it dead, and with its head
    He went galumphing back.

'And has thou slain the Jabberwock?
Come to my arms, my beamish boy!
O frabjous day! Callooh! Callay!
    He chortled in his joy.

`Twas brillig, and the slithy toves
    Did gyre and gimble in the wabe;
All mimsy were the borogoves,
    And the mome raths outgrabe.

Cathedrals are works in progress!

Here are SOME of your ideas about what you'd do if you were a Cathedral pastor.
 • I would make a really big cross with things from 2005 in it.  People could put their own things in it and have it say "open in 50 years" so people a long time from now will know what it was like a long time ago.
 • Put in a teen center.
 • There should be things that teens enjoy but also help teens get close to God.
 • A huge cross on top of the oculus.
 • I would build a place for the homeless.
 • I like it the way it is.
 • I would build a labyrinth in front of the bronze doors.
 • Make a really big cross in front of the church outside.
 • I would build a care center where they could bless the people and other things.
 • I'd put in a red carpet.
 • I would put in massage chairs for the choir.
 • I'd put in air conditioning.
 • I'd add more musical instruments.
 • I would build a huge fountain in the courtyard of Jesus and Mary.
 • I probably wouldn't change much, but if I found a good space for it, I would try to add some paintings on the walls or maybe the ceiling.  Something colorful and beautiful.
 • I would build a place for people to find jobs.
 • I would build a care station for the homeless that need aid.
 • I would build an underground parking lot.
 • I would want more staff to help take care of the cathedral.
 • I would build a child care center.
 • It's perfect already, so... nothing!
