WELCOME! If you are a visitor to the Cathedral, we want you to know how welcome you are – whether you have come from another part of the country, from across the world, or simply from another parish here in the Archdiocese. Thanks, in part, to the generosity of visitors like you, we are able to celebrate the Church’s liturgy here in a fitting and beautiful way. We are also able to offer a wide range of services to needy people living in the central district of our city.

CONFIRMATION CLASSES FOR ADULTS AND HIGH SCHOOL STUDENTS 16 years and older begin Thursday, February 16, 6:30-8:30 pm in Cathedral Place Room 411. Full sacramental initiation (Baptism, Confirmation, and Eucharist) is important for all practicing Catholics, and is particularly important for those who are considering getting married. Information, John Marquez, 206-274-3106.

CELEBRATING CATHOLIC SCHOOLS – RAINBOW SCHOOLS COALITION. This weekend, we celebrate Catholic Schools, and in particular the Cathedral children who attend one of the five Rainbow Schools. Our parish is a contributing member of the Rainbow Schools Program whereby children from our parish can attend at “parishioner” tuition rates. Approximately 60 cathedral children are enrolled in one of these terrific schools. Today representatives of St. Edward, St. George, St. Paul, St. Joseph and St. Therese Catholic Schools will be available following the 10:00am and Noon Masses during hospitality. In addition, our parish has established the Cathedral Scholarship Fund to assist families in meeting the financial obligation involved in sending their elementary school aged children to any one of the Rainbow Schools. Information, TerryAnn Bowen, 206-382-2018.

CALLED TO PROTECT FOR MINISTRIES will be held on Saturday, February 11 at 10:00am in the Cathedral Hall. New volunteers with ongoing unsupervised contact with minors or vulnerable adults are required to take this foundational one-time Safe Environment training. Register online at www.seattlearchsep.org. Information, Elizabeth Falzone, 206-654-4650.

THE CATHEDRAL HEALTH AND ECOLOGY FAIR is coming soon. The Health and Healing Committee is taking applications for health or ecology related educational display-tables at this year’s fair. Space is limited! Information, or to make your application, John Simpson, Pastoral Care Minister, at 206-274-3173.

CATHOLIC ADVOCACY DAY. Join St. James Cathedral staff and parishioners in Olympia on Wednesday, February 15, for Catholic Advocacy Day. In these times of economic hardship for so many, we need to ensure that the Gospel message to care for our brothers and sisters is heard by our elected officials. The legislative priorities we will be addressing are economic justice, housing and health care. Appointments will be made with individual legislators, and transportation will be provided. Registration required! Information, and to register, Patty Bowman, 206-382-4515.

ST. JAMES YOUTH MUSIC PROGRAM IS ACCEPTING NEW SINGERS in to our renowned youth choirs. In the two training choirs (grades 1-4) young people learn to participate fully and actively in the Mass through exciting and innovative musical teaching. Some of the Northwest’s most highly recognized music educators will inspire your student with both vocal and instrumental training. No audition is necessary for the training choirs. We are also holding auditions for our other two ensembles, the Schola Cantorum (treble voices, grades 5-8) and our Young Women's Ensemble, Jubilate! for upper teens. Scholarships are available. Help us Make A Joyful Noise! Information, Stacey Sunde, 206-382-4874.

DO YOU SHOP AT BARTELL’S? St. James Cathedral is now a member of Bartell Drugs ‘B’ Caring program. Pick up a ‘B’ Caring Card at Bartell’s and designate St. James Cathedral as the beneficiary, and Bartell’s will contribute up to 4% of your purchases to St. James Cathedral every time you shop there and present your card.

SACRIFICIAL GIVING 2012. The pledge cards are back in the pews! If you haven’t yet made your pledge for 2012, please do so today. We have received 1,025 pledges, which is great news, but we’re still 94 pledges (and $88,000) behind last year! Your support is urgently needed to help us meet our budget this year. Please drop your completed pledge in the offering basket today, or make your pledge online.

DO YOU WORK AT ADOBE? The parish needs to upgrade to InDesign software for our Orders of Celebration and special programs. We are looking for Adobe employees who would be willing to help with donations of software. We need three copies of the latest edition of InDesign. Information, Renan Jeffereis, 206-622-3559.

THE SPIRIT OF PROPHECY. The art show in the Chapel will continue through Sunday, February 19. On Saturday, February 18 at 7:00pm, IMAGE Journal of the sacred arts will host a closing reception, beginning with a viewing in the Chapel and continuing with light refreshments in the Rectory. All are welcome. Information, Corinna Laughlin.

CATHEDRAL WINDOWS. Friday, February 17, 8:00pm, our own Cathedral Organist Joseph Adam plays a program of chant-based organ works on the Cathedral’s two grand pipe organs. He will be joined by Peregrine Medieval Vocal Ensemble, directed by parishioner Bill McJohn. The program will feature Karg-Elert’s colorful Cathedral Windows, Widor’s Symphonie gothique, and other music by Bach, deGrigny, and Scheidemann. $15 suggested donation, students & seniors pay as able. Information, 206-382-4874 or Cathedral Music web page.

SEND US YOUR RECIPES. Following up on the enormous success of the first ESL cookbook, we are once again asking parishioners for recipes. This newest edition will be devoted entirely to desserts. We are especially interested in old family recipes that reflect your cultural background. Feel free to to include any family stories or cultural history related to your recipe. Mail your contribution to: St James ESL Program, 804 Ninth Ave, Seattle, WA 98104 or email it to Mali Main. Information, Mali Main at 206-382-4511.

WOULD YOU CONSIDER ASSISTING A PERSON who wants to become Catholic? We continue to have new inquirers coming to participate in our Christian Initiation process to learn more about the Catholic Church (RCIA). We need St. James parishioners to be companions with our new inquirers to help welcome them to our community. The time commitment is reasonable – 2 Wednesday evening sessions a month. Training and support are provided. The rewards are many, including renewal and update of your faith and “kudos” in heaven. Information, TerryAnn Bowen, 206-382-2018.

Getting to know Good Pope John

Later this year, thanks to some generous parishioners, a permanent shrine to Blessed John XXIII, the Pope who called the Second Vatican Council, will be established in the north aisle of the Cathedral. Throughout the year, keep an eye on this box in the bulletin to learn more about this great saint of modern times.

“The sense of my smallness and of my nothingness has always been my good companion, keeping me humble and content and granting me the joy of consecrating myself as best I can to the uninterrupted exercise of obedience and charity. I come from humble beginnings, and I was raised in a restraining, blessed poverty whose needs are few and which assures the growth of the highest and noblest virtues, and prepares one for the great ascents of life.”

PARISH REMEMBRANCE: Throughout the year, because we are the Cathedral Church, we remember in prayer at Mass and Vespers each of the parishes and missions of the Archdiocese of Seattle on a Sunday near their feast day. This week we remember in prayer the parishes of Our Lady of Lourdes in Seattle and Vancouver, the mission church of Our Lady of Lourdes in Wilkeson.
